Tree on Power Lines? Don't Cut Anything — Isolate First, Always

A tree or branch on a power line turns the whole tree into a conductor — and anyone who touches it, prunes it or tries to pull it free becomes the path to earth. Keep everyone clear and call High Demand Electrical on 0402 559 777. Our Level 2 crews isolate, clear and repair tree-damaged lines 24/7 across Sydney.

Why Tree-on-Line Is So Dangerous

Tree contact incidents injure gardeners, tree loppers and helpful neighbours every year — because the danger is invisible.

  • A live line energises the tree — wet timber conducts well, and current can pass through branches, trunk and roots.
  • The line may look intact but be abraded live under the limb — or fail and drop the moment weight shifts.
  • Never prune, chainsaw or rope-pull a tree touching a line — not even 'just the far branches'.
  • After storms, assume every leaning tree near a span is loaded on it — keep the area clear until inspected.

The Safe Sequence

Tree-on-line jobs have one golden rule: electricity first, chainsaw second.

counter_1

Clear the area

People and pets away from the tree, the span and anything touching either — the fall zone plus 8 metres.

counter_2

Identify the line

Street mains — report to Ausgrid (13 13 88) or Endeavour (13 10 03). Your service line or private pole span — that's us, 24/7.

counter_3

We isolate the line

De-energised and proven dead under our Level 2 authorisation — the step that makes everything after it survivable.

counter_4

Tree cleared safely

Limbs removed off the dead span — we coordinate with arborists on big removals.

counter_5

Line repaired and re-energised

Damaged conductor and hardware repaired or replaced, clearances restored, supply back on — same visit wherever possible.

The Damage Trees Do to Lines

What we find and fix after tree contact — sometimes obvious, often hidden.

article

Abraded Insulation

Branches rubbing in the wind strip insulation over months — leaving bare live conductor waiting in the canopy.

switch

Stretched and Damaged Conductors

Limb weight stretches the span and work-hardens the conductor — we assess whether it's re-tensionable or done.

storm

Torn Points of Attachment

Falling limbs load the span suddenly — ripping the anchor from the fascia. See service line pulled off house.

cable

Broken Crossarms and Pole Hardware

The pole end takes the same shock — cracked crossarms and bent stays that fail later if unchecked.

warning

Downed Spans

The full failure — line on the ground under a tree. See fallen power line, and keep 8 metres clear.

Repeat-Contact Vegetation

The branch that touched once will touch again — we advise on clearance trimming and line re-routing to end the cycle.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs

A branch is resting on my power line but nothing's sparking. Is it urgent?

Yes. A resting branch abrades insulation with every gust, pushes the span below safe clearance, and can energise the tree — silently. The absence of sparks means nothing. Keep everyone away from the tree and call 0402 559 777; we'll triage severity honestly and respond 24/7 if it's live contact.

Can my tree lopper just cut the branch off the line?

Not safely, and mostly not legally — vegetation near live conductors requires the line isolated first, and clearance work near mains has strict rules. The safe sequence is: we isolate and prove the line dead, then the limb comes off, then we repair and re-energise. We coordinate with your arborist routinely.

Who pays when a tree damages power lines — me, my neighbour or insurance?

Damage to your service line or private pole span is typically a home insurance claim, whether the tree was yours or blew in from next door — insurers sort recovery between themselves. We provide the cause report, photos and itemised quote your claim needs, and work with all major insurers.
