Why Cranes Need Clearance From Powerlines

SafeWork NSW's Code of Practice for working near overhead powerlines sets a minimum safety clearance of 3 metres, increasing depending on line voltage and site conditions. If a crane, its load or boom will operate within this exclusion zone, a Safety Advice Request must be lodged with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy before the lift proceeds — this is a legal requirement, not a recommendation.

What Happens on Lift Day

Our Level 2 electrician isolates the affected overhead service line before the crane begins operating, and can remain on standby throughout the lift if your site's safety plan requires it. Once the lift is complete, supply is reconnected and energised the same day — minimising disruption to builders, tenants or neighbouring properties.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs

By ensuring your property is inspected by High Demand Electrical, you are taking a significant step towards securing its safety and enhancing its efficiency. Reach out today to learn more about how we can assist you in maintaining a safe and compliant electrical environment.

Why do crane operators in Sydney need a Level 2 electrician for disconnections?

Overhead and underground service lines often run directly through crane operating zones. Only a Level 2 electrician is authorised by the network provider to safely disconnect and reconnect these lines, ensuring your lift complies with safety regulations and avoids costly shutdowns or fines.

What does the disconnect and reconnect process involve?

Our Level 2 electricians manage the full process — from coordinating with the network provider to isolating the service line before your lift begins, through to safely restoring the connection once the crane operation is complete. Both overhead and underground service lines are covered.

What safety equipment is used during the disconnection?

Our Level 2 Electricians are equipped with advanced diagnostic tools to ensure accurate meter installations and calibrations. This precision allows for reliable electricity usage readings, essential for proper billing and energy management. We strictly adhere to the latest Australian Standards and network provider regulations, ensuring every metering service is compliant and accurately records consumption.

How far in advance should I book a disconnect and reconnect service?

We recommend booking as early as possible — ideally at least 5 business days before your scheduled lift. Network provider coordination and compliance paperwork take time, and early booking ensures there are no delays on the day of your crane operation.

Do you handle both residential and commercial crane lift sites?

Yes. Our Level 2 electricians are qualified to work across the full spectrum — from residential construction sites to heavy industrial and commercial projects across Sydney. Regardless of scale, the same compliance standards and safety protocols apply.

How do you ensure the work meets Australian Standards?

Every disconnect and reconnect job is completed in strict accordance with the latest Australian Standards and network provider regulations. Our Level 2 electricians are fully accredited and use advanced diagnostic tools to verify that all connections are safe, accurate, and compliant before signing off.

What information should I have ready when I contact you?

Having the following ready helps us mobilise quickly: your site address, the planned lift date and time, whether the service lines are overhead or underground, and your network provider's details if known. Our team will handle the coordination from there.

"Chris was the professional, punctual and his services are exceptional. Chris re-wired the entire property, chased the electrical work in the bathroom and kitchen areas, left a clean and tidy environment and his open communication and dialogue was a welcomed experience.

When he quoted an arrival time, he was there. He talked me through what he was doing, and provided feedback/suggestions on how to tackle any issues. I felt part of the process, as opposed to being another Customer.

A pleasure to deal with, and I recommend his services. I'll be definitely calling him again with any electrical work I need done."
