Why Every Sydney Home Needs a Safety Switch

A safety switch — technically a Residual Current Device, or RCD — is the only device on your switchboard that actually saves lives. Circuit breakers and fuses protect your wiring from overload, but they won't trip fast enough to stop a fatal electric shock.

An RCD does. It cuts power in under 30 milliseconds the moment it detects current leaking to earth — through a frayed cable, a wet appliance, or a person.

Since 1991, every new powerpoint circuit in NSW has been required to have one. Since 2000, the same has applied to lighting circuits. If your home was built or last rewired before then, there's a real chance entire circuits in your house are running without protection.

Red Flags On Your Switchboard

Signs Your Home Is Missing Safety Switch Protection

1
No "test" button on your switchboard
A safety switch has a visible test button (usually labelled "T" or "Test"). If you only see standard circuit breakers — no test buttons anywhere — your circuits aren't RCD-protected.
2
Your home still has ceramic fuses
Ceramic fuses pre-date modern RCD technology. A switchboard upgrade is required before safety switches can be fitted.
3
The safety switch trips and won't reset
This usually means the RCD has detected a real fault — but it can also mean the device itself has failed. Don't ignore it.
4
Your home was built or rewired before 1991 (power) or 2000 (lighting)
These circuits were never required to have RCDs and probably don't.
5
You're adding an EV charger, pool, or major appliance
New circuits must be RCD-protected. EV chargers require Type A or Type B RCDs. See EV charger installation and pool bonding & RCD protection.
6
You're renting out a property in NSW
Under the Residential Tenancies Regulation 2019, landlords must ensure rental properties have working safety switches. See our rental property electrical inspection.

Compliance That Holds Up

As/Nzs 3000:2018 — What the Wiring Rules Actually Require

AUSTRALIAN STANDARD
AS/NZS 3000
2018
WIRING RULES COMPLIANT
Under the current Australian Standard, every final subcircuit in a domestic installation must be protected by an RCD with a rated residual current not exceeding 30 mA. That includes powerpoints, lighting, fixed appliances (ovens, hot water, air conditioning), and any new circuit added to your home.

As of May 2023, Type AC RCDs are no longer permitted for new or altered installations. Type A is now the minimum — it detects both standard AC fault currents and the pulsating DC fault currents produced by modern electronics.

If your installer offers to fit a Type AC RCD on new work, walk away. Every safety switch we install is a Type A or higher.

    FAQs

Is a safety switch the same as a circuit breaker?

No. A circuit breaker protects your wiring from overload. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electric shock by detecting tiny imbalances between active and neutral and tripping in under 30 milliseconds. Modern switchboards need both, and RCBOs combine the two in a single unit.

Are safety switches legally required in NSW?

Since 1991, every new powerpoint circuit in NSW has required RCD protection. Since 2000, the same has applied to lighting. Under AS/NZS 3000:2018, every final subcircuit on new or altered installations must be RCD-protected. NSW rental properties also require working safety switches under the Residential Tenancies Regulation 2019.

How often should I test my safety switch?

Press the "T" or test button every three months. The RCD should trip immediately. If it doesn't trip — or won't reset — call us. A non-tripping RCD is the same as no RCD at all.

What's the difference between Type AC, Type A and Type B RCDs?

Type AC detects standard AC fault currents only — no longer permitted for new installs since May 2023. Type A detects both AC and pulsating DC faults — the new baseline. Type B also detects smooth DC faults — required for EV chargers and certain solar installations.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install safety switches?

Sometimes. If your switchboard has space, modern din-rail mounting, and a good earth bar, RCDs can usually be fitted straight in. If you have ceramic fuses or a small mid-century board, a switchboard upgrade is required first.

"Chris was the professional, punctual and his services are exceptional. Chris re-wired the entire property, chased the electrical work in the bathroom and kitchen areas, left a clean and tidy environment and his open communication and dialogue was a welcomed experience.

When he quoted an arrival time, he was there. He talked me through what he was doing, and provided feedback/suggestions on how to tackle any issues. I felt part of the process, as opposed to being another Customer.

A pleasure to deal with, and I recommend his services. I'll be definitely calling him again with any electrical work I need done."
