Safe Crane Lifts Around Live Power Lines

Arborists and tree loppers cannot work safely within the exclusion zone of live overhead power lines. High Demand Electrical provides Level 2 ASP temporary disconnection and reconnection services so you can remove trees, branches and stumps that are too close to service lines or consumer mains. We handle the full network coordination with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

How Close Can You Work
to a Powerline?

NSW rules require a minimum 600mm clearance from powerlines, and homeowners or unaccredited workers should never trim within 3 metres of high-voltage overhead cables. Any work closer than the safe clearance must be carried out by a worker accredited under the SafeWork Code of Practice for Work Near Overhead Powerlines — and where the supply-side connection itself needs to be isolated, only a Level 2 ASP electrician is authorised to do it.

Full Disconnection vs
Tiger Tail Line Covers

Tiger tail line covers are bright, high-visibility sleeves fitted to overhead conductors, sometimes accepted by the network for lower-risk trims that maintain some separation from the line — see our Tiger Tail Installation service for details. A temporary disconnection is required for larger removals or works that will breach the exclusion zone. Our Level 2 electricians assess the job against SafeWork NSW and network rules and confirm which pathway will be approved before your crew arrives.

    FAQs

Why does a tree lopper need an electrician before removing trees near power lines?

When trees are growing close to or in contact with overhead power lines, the lines must be disconnected and made safe before any tree removal or lopping work can begin. Working near live power lines without a disconnection is illegal and extremely dangerous — even trees that appear to be clear of the lines can conduct electricity through moisture or contact during the cutting process. High Demand Electrical arranges the disconnection with the network, attends on the day of the job, and reconnects the supply once the tree work is complete.

How far does a tree need to be from power lines before a disconnection is required?

Under NSW legislation and network provider guidelines, any tree removal or lopping work within defined clearance distances of overhead power lines requires a licensed Level 2 electrician to disconnect the supply before work proceeds. The exact clearance distances vary depending on the voltage of the line, but as a general rule, if branches are within or likely to fall within the clearance zone during cutting, a disconnection is required. If you are unsure whether your job requires a disconnection, contact High Demand Electrical and we will assess the site and advise you.

How far in advance do I need to book a disconnect and reconnect for a tree lopping job?

We recommend booking as early as possible — ideally at least 3–5 business days before your scheduled tree lopping date. Some disconnections require a network application to be lodged with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy in advance, particularly where the overhead service needs to be temporarily removed or relocated rather than simply isolated. High Demand Electrical manages all network applications on your behalf, but lead times from the network provider can vary. For urgent jobs, contact us directly and we will do our best to accommodate your timeframe.

Can the tree lopper start work while the power is disconnected to nearby properties?

This depends on the nature of the disconnection. In some cases, only the specific service to the property where the tree work is occurring needs to be disconnected, allowing the tree lopper to work safely while neighbouring properties retain their supply. In other situations — particularly where trees are near street-side distribution lines — a broader disconnection may be required that temporarily affects neighbouring properties. High Demand Electrical coordinates with the network provider and the property owner to minimise the duration and scope of any supply interruption, and all affected parties are notified in advance.

How quickly can you disconnect power for tree work in Sydney?

We offer same-day service for scheduled works and priority response for storm-damaged trees resting on live lines.

Do I need a full disconnection or will tiger tails be enough?

It depends on clearance, line voltage and scope of works. Tiger tails may suit lower-risk trims, while larger removals typically require a temporary disconnection.

"Chris was the professional, punctual and his services are exceptional. Chris re-wired the entire property, chased the electrical work in the bathroom and kitchen areas, left a clean and tidy environment and his open communication and dialogue was a welcomed experience.

When he quoted an arrival time, he was there. He talked me through what he was doing, and provided feedback/suggestions on how to tackle any issues. I felt part of the process, as opposed to being another Customer.

A pleasure to deal with, and I recommend his services. I'll be definitely calling him again with any electrical work I need done."
