Under NSW legislation and network provider guidelines, any tree removal or lopping work within defined clearance distances of overhead power lines requires a licensed Level 2 electrician to disconnect the supply before work proceeds. The exact clearance distances vary depending on the voltage of the line, but as a general rule, if branches are within or likely to fall within the clearance zone during cutting, a disconnection is required. In other situations — particularly where trees are near street-side distribution lines — a broader disconnection may be required that temporarily affects neighbouring properties.
