What It Involves

What Is a 200A Underground Supply?

A 200A underground supply runs service mains from the network pit (in the street or footpath) through underground conduit to your switchboard or private pillar. The cable, conduit and trench are sized and installed to NSW Service & Installation Rules and AS/NZS 3000 — typically orange heavy-duty conduit at 500–600mm depth with detectable warning tape above.

Underground service eliminates aerial cabling on your building exterior and is significantly more resilient to storms, branch fall and accidental impact than overhead supply. Underground installations involve civil works — trench excavation, conduit installation, pit connection and surface reinstatement — and require coordination with your local council, the network distributor (Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy), and on some sites Sydney Water and other service providers. We manage all of it under one fixed-price quote.

200A is the right capacity for most modern Sydney homes adding EV chargers, ducted air-conditioning, induction cooking, pool equipment, solar and battery systems. Below 200A, sites often face phase upgrade requirements or consumer mains bottlenecks within five years of installation.Overhead service mains run from the network street pole (or a private pole on your property) via aerial cable to the Point of Attachment on your building. This is the most common connection method across Sydney, Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, and Essential Energy network areas.

The 200A Underground Supply Upgrade Process

From maximum demand calculation through to energisation — here’s exactly how High Demand Electrical manages a 200A underground upgrade end to end.

  • Maximum Demand Calculation
We prepare a maximum demand calculation for your site to AS/NZS 3000. This confirms 200A is the correct solution and forms the technical basis of your network application.
  • Network Application
We prepare and submit your supply upgrade application to your NSW distributor — including site details, maximum demand calculation, proposed underground configuration and civil-works specification.
  • Network Assessment
The distributor assesses available network capacity and reviews the proposed underground connection design. Most 200A applications proceed without requiring upstream construction.
  • Level 1 / Level 3 Coordination (If Required)
Where additional network capacity is needed, we coordinate Level 3 network design and Level 1 ASP construction through our managed supply chain — you still deal with one company.
  • Level 2 Installation
Our Level 2 ASP team completes the full underground installation — civil works, conduit, cable, pit connections, consumer mains, earthing, switchboard and metering. NOSW lodged on completion.
  • Energisation
Your new 200A underground supply is energised, tested and commissioned. CCEW and all compliance documentation are issued to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Answers to the questions we hear most from Sydney homeowners, builders, and site managers.

What’s involved in a 200A underground supply upgrade in Sydney?

An underground 200A upgrade involves excavating a trench from the network pit to your building, installing orange heavy-duty conduit (typically 500–600mm deep per AS/NZS 3000 and NSW Service & Installation Rules), pulling correctly rated service mains, connecting at the network pit, terminating at a 200A-rated switchboard, and energising through your distributor.

How much does a 200A underground supply upgrade cost in Sydney?

Costs vary by trench length, site access, surface reinstatement and whether a private pillar is required. Standard residential ranges $3,500–$7,000+; long runs, directional boring or restricted access push $7,000–$12,000+. We provide fixed-price quotes after a site assessment.

Is underground better than overhead?

Underground is cleaner, more weather-resistant and more reliable — and is increasingly required by councils for new developments. Overhead is cheaper but exposes cabling to storms, tree damage and clearance issues. See our 200A overhead supply page for the alternative.

Do I need council approval for trenching across the footpath?

In some cases, trenching in council footpath or road verge requires a road opening permit. We manage this as part of the project — including all coordination with your local Sydney council.

How long does a 200A underground upgrade take?

Civil works typically take 1–2 days. Electrical installation follows once civil works are complete. End-to-end project timing depends on network approval, which is usually several weeks.

"Chris was the professional, punctual and his services are exceptional. Chris re-wired the entire property, chased the electrical work in the bathroom and kitchen areas, left a clean and tidy environment and his open communication and dialogue was a welcomed experience.

When he quoted an arrival time, he was there. He talked me through what he was doing, and provided feedback/suggestions on how to tackle any issues. I felt part of the process, as opposed to being another Customer.

A pleasure to deal with, and I recommend his services. I'll be definitely calling him again with any electrical work I need done."
