Fallen Power Line? Treat It as Live — Every Time, No Exceptions

A fallen power line is the single most lethal electrical hazard the public ever encounters — and a line that looks dead can be energised, silent and waiting. Keep everyone at least 8 metres away and call now. High Demand Electrical's Level 2 crews isolate and repair fallen service lines 24/7 across Sydney.

Power Outages

The Rules That Keep People Alive

Most powerline fatalities involve someone who thought the line was dead, or tried to move it. Hold these four rules until crews arrive — and call 0402 559 777 immediately.

  • Every fallen line is live until an authorised crew proves otherwise — no spark, hum or movement means nothing.
  • 8 metres minimum from the line and anything touching it — fences, cars, trees, water, the lot.
  • Never move a line, not with wood, plastic or 'insulated' tools — nothing you own insulates against these voltages.
  • If a line falls on a car with people inside, they stay in the car — 000 first, and keep everyone else back.

Who Fixes Which Line

What happens next depends on whose line is down — here's how to tell, and what we do either way.

counter_1

Street mains down (pole-to-pole lines)

Network infrastructure — report to Ausgrid (13 13 88) or Endeavour Energy (13 10 03), and 000 if anyone is at risk.

counter_2

Your service line down (street to your house)

That's the line we repair — Level 2 work, our crews, 24/7.

counter_3

Line down from your private pole

Private infrastructure — entirely our territory, from isolation to full rebuild.

counter_4

Not sure which it is?

Call us anyway — we'll identify it immediately and coordinate with the network if it's theirs.

counter_5

Either way: secure the area first

Keep the 8-metre zone empty until someone authorised declares the line dead.

Why Service Lines Come Down

The causes we see across Sydney, storm season and otherwise.

article

Storms and High Wind

Wind loading and flying debris bring spans down — the classic storm-night emergency. See storm damage.

switch

Trees and Falling Branches

Branches through the span, or gradual limb pressure — see tree on power lines.

storm

Failed Points of Attachment

Corroded brackets and rotten fascia let the line tear away from the building — see service line pulled off house.

cable

Vehicle Contact

Trucks, cranes and high loads snag low spans and rip them down — often damaging both ends.

warning

Conductor Age and Corrosion

Decades-old conductors fatigue and part — usually at the connection points, usually in weather.

power

Pole Failures

When a pole goes down, its lines go with it — see fallen power pole.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs

A power line is down in my yard. What do I do right now?

Keep every person and pet at least 8 metres away, touch nothing in contact with it, and call. If it's the street mains, report to your distributor and 000 if anyone's at risk; if it's your service line or private pole line, we isolate and repair it 24/7 — 0402 559 777. Unsure which? Call us and we'll identify it.

The fallen line isn't sparking. Doesn't that mean it's dead?

No — and this assumption kills people. A live conductor on the ground can sit silent, sparkless and lethal, and protection systems can re-energise a line without warning. Only an authorised crew with test equipment can declare it dead. Assume live, stay back, call.

How long does it take to repair a fallen service line?

Isolation is immediate once we arrive — 24/7. Most service line rebuilds are completed the same visit: new conductor, hardware and attachment, then reconnection under our own authorisation. Complex spans or pole damage can extend it; we'll give you a straight timeline on the phone.
