Main Switch Won't Reset? Stop Forcing It — It's Protecting You

A main switch that trips the moment you lift it — or won't move at all — isn't broken. It's doing its job: somewhere in your installation there's a live fault, and the switch is refusing to feed it. High Demand Electrical's emergency electricians find that fault and fix it, 24/7 across Sydney.

What It Means When the Main Won't Hold

The main switch is the last line of defence for your whole installation. When it won't stay on, the fault is usually significant — and forcing repeated resets pushes fault current through damaged wiring each time. Call 0402 559 777 instead.

  • Trips instantly on reset — a hard fault (short circuit or earth fault) is live somewhere downstream.
  • Holds briefly, then trips — a load-dependent fault; often a failing appliance or heat-affected cable.
  • Won't physically move — the switch mechanism itself has failed and needs replacement.
  • Trips with burning smell or buzzing — stop completely, leave it off, and call now.

What to Do Before We Arrive

You can safely narrow the fault down without opening anything.

counter_1

Reset a maximum of twice

If it won't hold after two attempts, leave it off. Every forced reset stresses the fault further.

counter_2

Switch off all circuit breakers, then try the main

If the main holds with circuits off, the fault is on one circuit — and you've just halved our diagnosis time.

counter_3

Unplug high-draw appliances

Ovens, dryers, heaters, pool pumps — failed elements in these are a top cause of main-switch trips.

counter_4

Note anything that changed today

New appliance? Heavy rain? Work done recently? The trigger usually points to the fault.

Why Main Switches Refuse to Reset

Six faults sit behind almost every "main won't reset" call we take.

article

Short Circuit on a Final Circuit

Damaged cable or a failed fitting dead-shorting active to neutral — the main (or its RCD) refuses to feed it.

switch

Faulty Appliance

A burnt-out element or shorted motor — commonly hot water systems, ovens and dryers — pulls the whole board down.

storm

Earth Leakage After Water Ingress

Rain in a junction box, light fitting or outdoor circuit leaks current to earth — the classic after-storm no-reset.

cable

Failed Main Switch Mechanism

Decades-old switches wear out mechanically — they won't latch even with no fault present. We replace from van stock.

warning

Switchboard Fault

Arcing busbars or burnt terminations behind the panel hold the main down — and need urgent repair.

Supply-Side Fault

Occasionally the fault is upstream — mains or service connection. Level 2 territory, and we're accredited for it.

How We Get You Back On

Systematic isolation finds the fault fast — then we fix the cause, not just the symptom, and test everything before handover.

  • Circuit-by-circuit isolation to corner the fault in minutes
  • Insulation resistance testing to confirm the damaged cable or fitting
  • Appliance fault identification — so you know exactly what failed
  • Main switch and breaker replacement from van stock
  • Switchboard and Level 2 supply-side repairs where the fault runs deeper
  • Full re-energisation, load testing and certification

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs

Why does my main switch keep tripping immediately?

An instant trip means the switch is seeing a hard fault — a short circuit or heavy earth leakage — somewhere downstream. Common culprits are failed appliances (hot water systems especially), water-damaged circuits after rain, and burnt switchboard connections. We isolate it circuit by circuit and repair the cause. Call 0402 559 777.

Is it dangerous to keep resetting the main switch?

Yes. Each reset drives full fault current through the damaged point — heating it, degrading it further, and in the worst case starting a fire. Two attempts maximum, then leave it off and call us.

The main switch holds when all the breakers are off. What now?

Good detective work — the fault is on one final circuit. Turn breakers back on one at a time; the one that drops the main is your faulty circuit. Leave that one off, use the rest of the house normally, and we'll repair the faulty circuit when we arrive.

The Main Won't Hold Until the Fault Is Fixed. Let's Fix It.

High Demand Electrical finds and repairs the fault behind a main switch that won't reset — 24/7 across Sydney, upfront pricing, Level 2 accredited. Call 0402 559 777.
