Sydney Storm Season Prep: The Electrical Jobs to Do Before Summer Hits

What electrical jobs should Sydney homeowners do before storm season? Before summer hits, check the assets storms attack first: trees near your service line, the condition of any private power pole, your switchboard and safety switches, and surge protection. Sydney's storm season peaks between November and March, and the quiet months of September and October are when this work is cheap, unhurried and easy to book.

1. Look up: trees and your overhead service line

Walk outside and follow the wire from the street to your house. Anything growing into or over that line is a summer failure waiting for a windy afternoon. Trimming near powerlines is not a DIY job, and who is responsible depends on whether the vegetation threatens the network's mains or your private service line, and which distributor you are on. 2. Check your private power pole

If your property has its own pole, it is your asset and your responsibility. Spring is the time to look for lean, rust at the base of steel poles, soft or cracked timber, and fungus at the ground line. A pole that fails in a February southerly takes your power, and possibly your neighbour's fence, with it. 3. Test your safety switches

Every safety switch has a test button for a reason. Press it: the switch should trip instantly, and everything on that circuit should go dark. Reset it and move to the next one. A switch that does not trip is not protecting anyone and needs an electrician. Homes built before the early 1990s may have circuits with no safety switch at all, which is worth fixing before the wet weather arrives, since moisture is exactly what these devices catch. 4. Give the switchboard and meter box a visual once over

Do not open anything. Just look. Rust streaks, cracked enclosures, perished door seals, gaps where cables enter and scorch marks are all signs the board will not keep the weather out come summer. Water in a switchboard is one of the most dangerous storm outcomes, as our wet switchboard guide explains, and an ageing board is better dealt with as a planned switchboard upgrade than an emergency replacement.

5. Sort surge protection before the lightning arrives

Lightning does not need to hit your house to destroy the electronics in it; a strike streets away can push a damaging spike down the network. Plug in powerboards only protect what is plugged into them. 6. Save the numbers and make a blackout plan

Put the emergency numbers in your phone now: Ausgrid 13 13 88, Endeavour Energy 131 003, and 000 for anything life threatening. Our emergency contacts guide lists the lot. Then think about what actually stops in a blackout at your place: fridge, freezer, garage door, medical equipment, work from home gear.

If losing power for a day or two is more than an inconvenience, spring is when to plan backup power. 7. Know the difference between prep and the pre-storm check

This is the pre-season list: jobs done once, in the calm months.
