Water in Your Switchboard After a Storm: Why You Must Not Flip the Mains Back On
Should you turn the power back on if water has got into your switchboard? No. A wet switchboard needs to be inspected, dried and tested by an electrician before anything is re-energised. Flipping the main switch or resetting tripped breakers on a wet board risks electric shock, fire and destroying equipment that might otherwise have survived.

1. Why re-energising a wet board is the worst move
Switchboards are designed to keep live parts separated by air and insulation. Water bridges those gaps. Energising a wet board can push current across paths it was never meant to take, a process called tracking, which burns insulation and can start a fire inside the enclosure.
There is also the simpler danger: a wet metal enclosure or wet switch can put mains voltage on the surface you are about to touch. The tripped breakers annoy you, but they are doing their job. Leave them off.
2. How water gets into a switchboard
On older Sydney homes the usual entry points are perished door seals on outdoor boards, cracked or missing conduit glands where cables enter, holes left from old equipment, and rain driven sideways into ageing meter enclosures. Water also travels along cables themselves, following the conduit from a flooded trench or a leaking eave straight into the board.
Boards that predate modern standards often have no drip protection at all, which is one of several reasons an old switchboard is worth upgrading before storm season rather than after it.
3. What to do right now
Keep everyone away from the board. If the main switch is dry, clearly accessible and you can operate it without touching anything wet, switching it off is sensible. If the board is dripping, sizzling or you are unsure, do not touch it at all. Call an electrician, and for anything actively arcing or burning call 000 first.
Take photos from a safe distance for your insurer, and do not start mopping out the enclosure. Nothing inside a switchboard is user serviceable, wet or dry.
4. The inspect, dry, test, replace sequence
A proper response is methodical. The electrician isolates the board, opens it up and traces how far the water travelled. Everything is dried, then the parts that matter are tested rather than trusted: insulation resistance across the circuits, and a full trip test on every safety switch. Gear that fails, or that shows corrosion and water staining inside, gets replaced.
This is where shortcuts hurt. A safety switch that was submerged can click on and appear to work while its internals are corroding, then fail to trip the day you actually need it. 5. When the meter or service side is involved
Everything up to your main switch, including the service line, point of attachment, service fuse and metering, sits on the network side of the installation. If water has entered through the meter enclosure or the consumer mains, repairs in that zone are Level 2 ASP work, and the network may need to disconnect supply before it can be touched.
