Does Your Private Power Pole Need Replacing? 8 Signs Sydney Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore
Most Sydney homeowners don’t think about their private power pole until something goes wrong. It’s tucked away in a corner of the yard, and unless the lights go out or a storm brings it down, it tends to get overlooked for years — sometimes decades. The problem is that a private power pole approaching the end of its service life doesn’t always fail dramatically. The deterioration can be gradual and largely invisible from the outside, right up until it isn’t.
At High Demand Electrical, our Level 2 electricians inspect private power poles across Sydney every week. Based on what we see, these are the eight warning signs that tell us a pole is due for assessment or replacement — and some of them will surprise you.
1. The Pole Is More Than 25 Years Old
Age alone is one of the most reliable indicators of risk. The expected service life of a standard treated timber power pole in Sydney’s climate is approximately 25–40 years, depending on the timber species, the preservative treatment, and the local conditions. Poles in coastal or humid inner-suburb environments tend to deteriorate faster; those in drier outer-suburban areas may last longer.
If you don’t know how old your pole is, check your property’s electrical records or ask High Demand Electrical during an inspection. A pole that has reached or exceeded 25 years without a formal assessment is carrying unknown risk.
2. The Pole Is Visibly Leaning
A power pole should stand perfectly vertical. If yours has developed a lean — even a slight one — it indicates that the foundation or the base of the pole has been compromised. Common causes include soil movement, water ingress around the base, root rot, termite activity, or a historical impact that shifted the pole slightly. A leaning pole places additional load on the service line and on the attachment point at the house, and it is more likely to fall in a storm.
3. Visible Cracking or Splitting at the Base
Inspect the base of your pole at ground level. Splitting along the grain, longitudinal cracking, or visible voids in the timber are warning signs of advanced internal deterioration. Timber decays from the inside out in many cases, and by the time you can see cracking at the surface, the internal decay may already be severe. A boring test by a Level 2 electrician can confirm the extent of internal rot.
4. Soft or Spongy Timber When Probed
A healthy timber power pole should be solid and firm at the base. If probing the base with a screwdriver or pointed tool produces soft, spongy, or hollow-sounding results, the timber fibres have broken down internally. This is a clear sign that the structural integrity of the pole is compromised, and replacement should be assessed urgently.
5. Evidence of Termite Activity
Subterranean termites are a significant threat to timber power poles in Sydney, particularly in outer-suburban areas and properties close to bushland. Signs of termite activity include mud tubes on or around the base of the pole, hollow-sounding timber when tapped, and frass (termite droppings) around the base. If termites are active in or around your power pole, the structural integrity may already be seriously compromised.
6. Corroded or Damaged Earthing and Bonding
The earthing system on a private power pole is a critical safety component. The earth conductor runs from the service neutral down the pole to a buried earth electrode. Over time, the clamps, the conductor, and the electrode can corrode, loosen, or be mechanically damaged. A compromised earthing system means that in the event of a fault, the safety protection the earthing system is designed to provide may not function correctly.
Earthing deficiencies are one of the most commonly cited items on Ausgrid defect notices, and they can be addressed without a full pole replacement in some cases. But they must be addressed — not ignored.
7. A Service Line That Sags Excessively or Shows Weathering
The overhead service line between your private pole and the house (or between the street pole and your private pole) has a finite service life. Signs that it may need attention include excessive sag (particularly after it was once tighter), visible cracking or whitening of the insulation, and any visible corrosion at the connection points. An undersized or deteriorated service line is both a safety risk and a source of voltage drop that can affect appliance performance.
8. You’ve Received (or Know of) a Previous Defect Notice That Was Never Resolved
This is more common than you might think. Properties change hands, paperwork gets lost, and defect notices issued to a previous owner sometimes never make it to the current occupant. If you have any reason to believe your property may have an outstanding defect notice — or if the previous owner mentioned electrical works that “needed to be done” — it is worth having a Level 2 electrician check with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy before it becomes your problem at the worst possible time.
What to Do If You Notice Any of These Signs
The right response to any of these warning signs is to arrange a private pole inspection with a licenced Level 2 ASP. High Demand Electrical provides thorough private pole inspections across Sydney, including boring tests for internal rot, earthing continuity testing, and a full review of the service line and metering equipment. You’ll receive a written report and clear advice on whether the pole can be maintained or needs to be replaced.
For properties where replacement is required, our Level 2 team manages the entire process — from the network application through to the Certificate of Compliance. We also work with the specialist team at HD Power Pole Sydney for complex or large-scale private pole replacement projects across greater Sydney.
Book a Private Pole Inspection
Don’t wait for a storm, a defect notice, or a supply disconnection to find out what’s going on with your private power pole. A proactive inspection costs a fraction of an emergency replacement, and it gives you the information you need to plan any required work on your own schedule.
