Surge protected powerboards have three limits. They only protect the devices plugged into them, leaving your fridge, oven, air conditioning, hot water and every hardwired appliance exposed. They degrade silently, because the metal oxide varistors inside absorb a finite amount of energy and often give no visible sign when they are spent. And a major spike can overwhelm one instantly.

4. Type 1 vs Type 2: which one your home needs

Type 2 devices install at your switchboard and are the standard choice for most Sydney homes, handling both network surges and the internal appliance spikes. Type 1 devices are built for higher energy events and suit homes with exposed overhead service mains, storm prone locations, properties with lightning protection systems, and homes with solar and battery equipment worth protecting hard. Some owners fit both. When comparing units, a clamping voltage of 400V or lower and a rated surge current of at least 20kA are the numbers worth asking about, and a higher kA rating means more headroom for big events.
