Solar Ready vs Solar Installed: Pre-Wiring a New Build or Reno for Panels Later

Solar ready means the conduit, board space and cable routes go in while the walls are open, so panels can be added later without rework. Here is what to provision during a Sydney build or reno.

What does making a new build or reno solar ready actually involve? It means installing the boring, cheap parts of a solar system while the walls and ceilings are open: a conduit run from the roof space to the switchboard, spare ways on the board, a reserved wall for the inverter and metering that can handle generation. Do that during the build and panels become a straightforward add-on later. Skip it and you pay for access, patching and rework on top of the solar itself.

1. The conduit spine is the whole game

The single most valuable provision is a continuous conduit run with a draw wire from the roof space down to the switchboard location. That route is trivial to install during framing and painful to create afterwards. When the panels eventually go in, the installer pulls the cabling through, makes the roof penetrations with proper flashing, and never touches your finished walls.

2. Reserve the inverter wall now

Inverters want to live close to the switchboard, protected from weather and out of direct afternoon sun, because they are rated to specific maximum operating temperatures. Reserving a metre of wall in the garage or on the shaded side of the house costs nothing on paper today and avoids an awkward compromise later. A short, direct run between inverter and board also keeps the voltage rise calculation the Service and Installation Rules of NSW require well inside limits.

3. Leave room on the switchboard

Solar adds circuits and protection at the board. Ask your electrician to leave spare ways and to size the board with generation in mind, not just today's circuits. This ties directly into your home's maximum demand and spare capacity, which determines how much headroom the board and your supply actually have for solar, a future EV charger or further electrification down the track. 4. Plan the metering

A solar system cannot be energised until compliant metering is in place, so think about the meter box early: location, condition and space. Meter boxes also need clear access for the retailer or meter provider, and an older box that has never carried solar may need enlarging or relocating to fit a bi-directional meter. Confirming this while the walls and meter box surrounds are already being worked on avoids a separate site visit once the panels are ready to switch on. 5. Know your export limits before you size anything

6. When installed beats ready

If the budget stretches, installing solar during the build is usually better value than provisioning alone, because the scaffold, the electrician and the planned outage are already on site. Solar ready is the smart fallback when the budget or the roof design is not settled yet, not the superior option.
