What does a compliant grid-connected solar installation actually look like? Under the Clean Energy Council (CEC) guidelines and AS/NZS 5033, it means an accredited installer genuinely on site, a design done for your specific roof, mandatory commissioning tests with recorded results, and a documentation pack handed over at the end. If a quote can't demonstrate those four things, the saving is coming out of your roof's future.

1. Accreditation is what unlocks the rebate
For a system to earn small-scale technology certificates (STCs), it must be installed by an accredited person under the CEC scheme. Accreditation is ongoing, not a one-off: installers are bound by a code of conduct, complete professional development yearly, and can be suspended or struck off for poor work. First question for any quote: who is the accredited person, and will the system be signed off in their name?
2. The installer must actually be on your roof
The guidelines require the accredited person to install or genuinely supervise — defined as attending during job set-up, a mid-installation check, and final testing and commissioning — and cap sign-offs at two complete installations a day. The cap exists because "drive-by sign-offs" were a real industry problem. If the accredited name on your paperwork won't be on site, that's your cue to ask harder questions.
3. A design for your roof, not a template
A compliant design specifies make, model and quantity of panels and inverter, accounts for shading, orientation and tilt, and gives you an estimated average daily yield for each month of the year. The mounting must meet the wind loading standard (AS/NZS 1170.2), and the inverter must match the array — its rated AC output can't be less than 75 per cent of the array's peak power. 4. Roof details that decide whether it leaks in year six
Cable and conduit through a tile or steel roof need a fit-for-purpose collar flashing, not silicone. Tiles must sit flat after mounting brackets go in — sometimes that means grinding the underside of a tile to keep its weatherproofing. There should be clearance under the array for the roof to self-clean, and in leafy parts of Sydney it's worth keeping possums and birds out from under the panels. None of this shows up in day-one output; all of it decides how the install ages.
5. Switch-on is a test procedure, not a ceremony
AS/NZS 5033 requires commissioning tests before the system goes live: continuity of string and earth connections, voltage and polarity of every string, insulation resistance of the array wiring, and operating the DC isolator under load to prove it safely disconnects. A written shutdown procedure must be displayed at the equipment — including the warning that a DC isolator does not de-energise the panels and their cables while the sun is up. You should walk away with a full system manual; no documentation is a red flag that will bite at sale or warranty time.
