1. Why solar needs its own standard

One detail catches people out: with one isolator off, the array can still be carrying current from panel to panel. All DC isolators need to be switched off to fully isolate the array, which is why AS/NZS 5033 requires clear signage wherever there are multiple isolation points.

DC cables must carry a voltage rating that matches the calculated maximum voltage of your specific array, and they must be rated for outdoor and UV exposure where relevant. Above certain voltages, cables also need double insulation.

The risk the standard is guarding against is undersized or incorrectly rated cable that looks fine on installation day but degrades faster — or presents a fire risk — over the system's lifetime.
