Partial Power Loss? Half a House Out Is a Warning Sign — Act Now

Some circuits working, others dead? Lights on but no power points? Partial power loss is one of the most misunderstood electrical emergencies in Sydney — and one of the most dangerous, because it often signals a failing neutral or deteriorating mains connection. High Demand Electrical's Level 2 emergency electricians diagnose it 24/7.

What Partial Power Loss Looks Like

Partial loss of supply shows up in ways that are easy to shrug off — until the fault escalates. If you recognise any of these, don't wait for a total blackout. Call 0402 559 777.

  • Half the house dead — some rooms or circuits fine, others with nothing.
  • Lights work but power points don't (or the reverse).
  • Lights dim or brighten when appliances switch on — a classic failing-neutral symptom.
  • Tingling taps or appliances — stop touching them and call immediately; this can be a shock risk.

What to Do Right Now

Partial power loss can involve a live fault. These steps keep you safe until we arrive.

counter_1

Check the switchboard once

A single tripped breaker can kill one circuit. Reset it once — if it trips again, leave it off and call us.

counter_2

Don't touch tingling taps or appliances

Any tingle from metal fixtures suggests a broken neutral — keep everyone away and call straight away.

counter_3

Unplug appliances on the dead circuits

They can be damaged when supply returns unevenly or at the wrong voltage.

counter_4

Switch off sensitive electronics

Voltage on a faulty phase can run high enough to destroy TVs, computers and fridges.

Call 0402 559 777

Tell us exactly which circuits are out — it helps us diagnose whether the fault is in the board, a phase or the neutral before we arrive.

What Causes Partial Loss of Power

Partial supply loss almost always traces back to one of these six faults — several of which only a Level 2 electrician can legally repair.

article

Broken or Deteriorating Neutral

The most dangerous cause: voltage wanders, lights flicker, taps tingle, appliances burn out. We treat suspected neutral faults as top-priority emergencies.

switch

Lost Phase (Three-Phase Properties)

On three-phase supply, one failed phase kills a third of your circuits. We test, repair and reconnect all phases.

storm

Blown Service Fuse

One blown fuse at the connection point can drop part of your supply. Level 2 work — we carry replacements on every van.

cable

Failed Circuit Breaker or RCD

Breakers wear out. A failed unit can kill its circuit without visibly tripping. We test and replace on the spot.

warning

Damaged Consumer Mains

Partially failed mains — corroded, water-affected or heat-damaged — deliver unreliable supply before failing completely.

power

Loose Switchboard Connections

Heat-cycled terminals work loose over years, dropping circuits intermittently and scorching the board. We repair and re-terminate.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQs

Why does half my house have power and the other half doesn't?

Usually one of: a tripped or failed breaker, a blown service fuse, a lost phase (three-phase homes), or — most seriously — a broken neutral or partially failed consumer mains. The last two are dangerous and legally require a Level 2 electrician. We diagnose all of them on one call-out.

    Is partial power loss dangerous?

It can be. A failing neutral can push voltage high enough to destroy appliances and make metal fixtures tingle — a real shock risk. If lights are dimming and brightening or taps tingle, keep clear and call 0402 559 777 immediately.

Can I just keep using the circuits that still work?

We don't recommend it. Partial faults escalate, and the working circuits may be running at abnormal voltage. Unplug sensitive appliances and have the fault diagnosed before it becomes a total outage — or a fire.
