1. What V2G and V2H actually mean
Vehicle to grid (V2G) and vehicle to home (V2H) both describe an EV battery discharging power back out instead of only receiving it. V2H keeps that power inside your own home, running the fridge and lights during an outage the way a home battery would. V2G goes further and can export back into the grid, which is a bigger technical and regulatory step because it means the network has to account for power flowing from your driveway rather than just to it.
2. The hardware: why your current charger can't do this
A standard home EV charger, even a fast three phase unit, only ever sends power one way. Bidirectional charging needs a purpose built charger with the inverter electronics to convert the car's stored DC power back into usable AC power for your home or the grid, safely and in sync with the network. AS/NZS 4777.2 treats this kind of equipment as a type of inverter, and explicitly recognises vehicle to grid capable electric vehicle supply equipment as a multiple mode inverter, meaning it has to meet the same grid interactive and stand alone mode safety requirements as a solar or battery inverter.
3. The car: most EVs on Australian roads can't do this yet
Bidirectional capability has to be built into the vehicle itself, not added afterwards, and it's currently limited to a small number of EV models available in Australia. Before spending anything on bidirectional hardware, check whether your specific car actually supports V2G or V2H, because the charger alone can't add that capability if the vehicle wasn't built for it.
4. Approval: why the network has to sign off
Any equipment capable of sending power back into the grid changes how your connection needs to be managed, the same principle that already applies to solar and battery systems in Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy territory. Expect a V2G capable system to need the same kind of application and export approval process as a home battery, worked through with your Level 2 ASP and the network, before it's switched on. 5. What actually makes sense to do at home right now
Even without full V2G, there's genuine value in preparing.
