How do you tell what is actually inside your old switchboard? Open the door and look for three things: porcelain fuse carriers you can pull out by hand, a dark rigid backing panel the gear is screwed to, and an absence of anything labelled safety switch or RCD. Each one dates the board, and together they tell you whether you are looking at a tidy piece of history or a genuine safety gap.
