Isolators, Main Switches and Emergency Shutoffs: What AS3000 Requires at Your Switchboard

What does AS3000 actually require for the main switch on your switchboard? Every electrical installation in Australia must have a main switch that can cut power to the whole property in an emergency, and AS3000 sets out exactly how it must be positioned, labelled and operated. It is one of the simplest rules in the wiring rules, and one of the most overlooked when older switchboards are inspected.

This guide explains what a main switch is for, what AS3000 requires of it, and why isolators for individual circuits and appliances matter just as much.

1. What a main switch is actually for

AS3000 requires the supply to every electrical installation to be controlled by a main switch or switches on the main switchboard. Its purpose is straightforward: to let anyone, including emergency services personnel, isolate the whole property's power supply quickly if something goes wrong.

A handful of things sit outside the main switch's control by design, including consumer mains and any equipment installed by your electricity distributor for metering or service protection. That is why meters and consumer mains stay live even when the main switch is off, and it is one reason working near a switchboard should always be left to a licensed electrician.

2. Where the main switch has to be positioned

AS3000 requires the main switch handle to sit no more than 2 metres above the floor, and to be located and arranged so it can be operated without climbing, in any lighting condition, during an emergency. This is a genuine safety requirement, not a formality. A main switch buried behind stored items, mounted too high, or hidden inside an unlabelled enclosure defeats the purpose it exists for.

On top of location, the main switchboard itself must be permanently and legibly marked so anyone, including a fire crew responding to an emergency, can find and operate it without guesswork.

3. Isolators cover individual circuits and equipment

Main switches are not the only isolation device AS3000 requires. Certain equipment needs its own dedicated isolator, separate from the main switch, so it can be shut off for servicing without cutting power to the rest of the property.

Air conditioners are the most common example. Every split system or ducted unit with a compressor needs a lockable isolating switch near (but not on) the outdoor unit, so a technician can safely isolate it during a service. Submains and final subcircuits rated over 100 amps per phase also require their own isolating switch at the switchboard where the circuit originates.

Isolators like these come up naturally during a switchboard upgrade, since older boards were rarely built with this level of individual isolation in mind.

4. Why older switchboards often fail on this

Many Sydney homes still have switchboards installed decades before current main switch and isolator requirements existed. Common issues we see on inspection include main switches mounted too high to reach safely, missing or faded MAIN SWITCHBOARD labelling, and air conditioners or other fixed appliances with no dedicated isolator at all.

None of these issues are usually urgent on their own, but they compound the risk during an actual emergency, which is exactly when a main switch needs to work without hesitation.
