Pool Heat Pumps: The Power Questions to Answer Before You Buy

A pool heat pump is one of the biggest loads you can add to a home, and it lands on top of the pool pump, aircon and everything else. Answer these power questions before you buy and the install goes smoothly.

What does a pool heat pump need electrically? Almost always its own dedicated circuit with safety switch protection and a weatherproof isolator by the unit, sized to the model you choose. Small residential units run happily on a modest single phase circuit, while large units, and anything heating a big pool fast, may call for a heavy circuit or a three phase supply. The real question is not the heat pump alone, it is whether your switchboard and supply can carry it on top of everything else you run.

  • Can it plug into a normal outdoor power point? Only the smallest units, and even then it is rarely good practice. Most models need a dedicated circuit installed by an electrician.
  • Single phase or three phase? Most domestic units are single phase. Large capacity units for big pools or fast heating often come in three phase versions that need a three phase supply.
  • Will it overload my home? That depends on your maximum demand: the heat pump stacks on top of the pool pump, aircon, oven and any EV charger. This is the number to check before buying.
  • What does it cost to run? Far less than resistive heaters for the same warmth, and less again if you run it on cheap daytime power or the right tariff.

1. The load reality: heating water is real work

A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, which is why it is efficient: each kilowatt of electricity in delivers several kilowatts of heat to the water. But the electrical input is still substantial, and unlike a kettle it runs for hours at a stretch through the swimming season. Treat it the way you would treat adding a ducted aircon: a permanent, hard working load that the rest of the installation has to accommodate. 2. A dedicated circuit, an isolator and safety switch protection

The standard installation is a dedicated circuit from the switchboard, protected by a safety switch, ending at a weatherproof isolator beside the unit so it can be shut off for servicing. If your board is old or already full, that one new circuit can be the thing that finally forces a switchboard upgrade, so have the board looked at before you commit to a delivery date. 3. Single phase or three phase?

Most residential pool heat pumps are single phase and fine on a healthy supply. Where pools are large, owners want fast heat up, or the home is already heavily loaded, three phase models come into play, and that only works if the property has three phase power. 4. Maximum demand: the stacking problem

Here is where pool heat pumps catch people out. The unit itself might be modest, but it arrives on top of a pool filtration pump, air conditioning, an induction cooktop, maybe an EV charger. 5. Running cost: tariffs do half the work

A heat pump rewards smart timing more than any other pool equipment. Run it in the middle of the day off your own solar, or in cheap windows on a time of use plan, and the running cost drops sharply. Why it's Level 2 ASP work (sometimes)

The circuit itself is standard electrical work. It becomes Level 2 territory when the supply has to grow: upgrading to three phase, replacing undersized consumer mains, or any work at the network connection. Can I run a pool heat pump from an existing outdoor power point?

Only the very smallest plug in units, and sharing a circuit with other outdoor loads invites nuisance tripping. Anything beyond entry level should have its own circuit, which also keeps the warranty conversation simple.

Will a pool heat pump trip my safety switch?

Do I need three phase for a pool heat pump?

Appendix C is a guide — the standard permits other assessment methods, and your electricity distributor or the NSW Service & Installation Rules may impose additional requirements.
