What actually changes

Going from single- to three-phase means bringing three active conductors into your home instead of one, and reworking everything that carries or distributes them. In practice that's three connected pieces of work: your consumer mains, your switchboard and main switch, and your metering. Here's each one.

1. Consumer mains become three-phase

Your consumer mains — the cables running from your point of attachment (or pit) to your main switchboard — are replaced with a correctly sized three-phase set. This is the backbone of the upgrade: it's what physically delivers all three phases from the network connection into your board, whether your supply is overhead or underground.

For Sydney properties on the Ausgrid network (most of metropolitan Sydney), the Level 2 ASP coordinates directly with Ausgrid to disconnect and reconnect the service safely. Properties in south-western and western Sydney on the Endeavour Energy network follow the same process through Endeavour's accredited service provider system. Either way, no work can legally start until the network connection is isolated by a licensed Level 2 ASP — a standard electrician cannot perform this step.

2. A three-phase switchboard and main switch

This is the core of the job. Your switchboard needs a three-phase main switch and the busbars and capacity to distribute three phases across your circuits. In most homes this means a switchboard upgrade or full rebuild — especially if you still have an older board with ceramic fuses or an asbestos backing panel, which are replaced with a modern board, proper RCDs and clear circuit labelling. A tidy, compliant three-phase board is what makes everything downstream safe and expandable.

3. Three-phase metering

Your single-phase meter is replaced with a three-phase smart meter, which measures usage across all three phases. This step is booked through your energy retailer's metering provider and coordinated with the upgrade, so the new supply is metered correctly from day one.

4. Balancing your circuits across the phases

With three phases available, your electrician can spread big loads across the phases rather than piling them onto one. This balancing step matters more than most people expect — it's what actually makes a three-phase supply run heavy equipment reliably.
