How Long Does a Three-Phase Upgrade Take?
Planning to go from single-phase to three-phase power? The most common question is how long does a three-phase upgrade take? The honest answer has two parts: the hands-on work at your place is usually quick — often a single day — but the full process, including your network's approval and the meter swap, typically runs a few weeks end to end. Here's exactly what happens at each stage, and what tends to cause delays.

The Short Answer: On-site vs End-to-End
On site, a straightforward three-phase upgrade is often done in a single day (sometimes two to three if a switchboard rebuild or extra work is involved). But you can't just book that day in isolation — it sits inside a longer process of assessment, network approval and metering. Realistically, budget a few weeks from first call to fully energised, most of it spent waiting on the network and the meter rather than on tools-down work.
Indicative only — timeframes vary with your network, property and scope of work.
Step by Step: What Each Stage Involves
1. Assessment and quote. We check whether your switchboard and consumer mains can take three-phase, confirm what needs replacing, and give you a fixed scope and price.
2. Network application. As an accredited Level 2 ASP, we lodge the connection application with your network provider — Ausgrid, Endeavour or Essential (see the differences between the three networks). This approval is often the longest single wait.
3. The upgrade day. We install the three-phase consumer mains, upgrade or rebuild the switchboard, and set up the metering position. Your power is off for part of the day while we change everything over safely.
4. Metering. A three-phase smart meter has to be installed by your retailer's metering provider — booked through your retailer, which can add lead time outside our control.
5. Energisation and certification. We make the final connection, lodge the electrical compliance certificate, and the network energises your new three-phase supply.
What Can Cause Delays
- Network approval backlogs — the busiest single variable, and outside any electrician's control.
- Metering lead times — meter installers are booked via your retailer and can take a couple of weeks.
- Switchboard surprises — asbestos backing boards or an unsafe old board can add work; our switchboard upgrade page explains what's involved.
- Service or pole work — if your point of attachment or service line also needs attention, that adds a step.
- Defects — pre-existing wiring defects sometimes have to be rectified before the network will connect.
How To Keep It Moving
The best way to avoid delays is to get the application in early and the scope right the first time. Because we handle the assessment, the network application and the certification ourselves, we can lodge promptly and keep the stages overlapping where possible. If you're upgrading specifically for an EV charger or other big load, tell us up front so we size it once — see 7kW vs 22kW if that's your driver.
How High Demand Electrical Helps
