The good news is that most Sydney streets already have three-phase running along the network. Whether your home can connect to it comes down to the supply in your street, whether your service is overhead or underground, and how far you are from the network. The short answer: usually yes, but it depends
In most established Sydney suburbs, the distribution network in the street already carries three phases, so connecting your home is realistic. But availability isn't guaranteed everywhere — some older or outer-area streets only have single-phase on the local network, and even where three-phase exists, the ease of connecting it depends on your property's setup. Four things decide it.
What determines whether you can get three-phase
- 1. The supply in your street. The network has to have three-phase running past your property. In most urban Sydney streets it does; in some pockets only single-phase is available, which would require a network extension.
- 2. Overhead vs underground. With an overhead supply, adding phases along the service line to your point of attachment is often straightforward. With an underground supply, it depends on whether the pit and conduit have capacity for the extra conductors — if not, trenching or a new conduit may be needed.
- 3. Distance from the network. The further your property sits from the transformer or main, the more voltage drop over the run. Long distances can require larger cable or a network solution to deliver stable three-phase.
- 4. Your connection assets. Your private power pole, point of attachment, pit and consumer mains all need the capacity to carry three-phase — sometimes these need upgrading as part of the job.
Overhead vs underground supply
This is usually the biggest practical factor. An overhead service (a line from a street or private pole to your roof or pole) is generally the easier and cheaper path to three-phase — the extra conductors can often be run along the existing route. An underground service is neater but less flexible: everything runs through a pit and conduit, and if there isn't spare capacity for the additional cores, the work grows to include excavation or a new conduit.
