1. What a private pole is and who owns in

Under the Service and Installation Rules of NSW, a private pole is usually positioned close to the front boundary and must be clearly marked as a private pole so network crews can identify it.

2. When a homeowner actually needs one

The common triggers are practical. The house sits too far from the street for a direct span, so the service line needs a mid point of support. The block is a battleaxe or shares a long driveway. A renovation, carport or pool has made existing clearances non compliant. Or the distributor has issued a defect notice on an ageing pole that is leaning, rotted or rusted through.

3. Choosing the pole: timber, steel or composite

Treated hardwood poles are the traditional choice and the cheapest to buy, but they need monitoring for rot and termites as they age. Hot dip galvanised steel poles cost more up front and resist ground line decay far better. Composite poles are the newest option: light, non conductive and highly durable. 4. What installation involves, step by step

First comes a site assessment: where the pole must stand for compliant clearances, soil conditions, and how the service line will route. Then the paperwork: your Level 2 electrician lodges the required notifications with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy before and after the work. On installation day the crew excavates the footing, stands and plumbs the pole, fits the crossarm and hardware, and transfers or installs the overhead service mains. Supply is disconnected and reconnected safely as part of the job, everything is tested, and you receive the compliance paperwork.

Plan on a visual check after every big storm and a professional inspection every few years, more often for older timber. Leaning, ground line rot, rust and cracked crossarms are the signals to act on early, because a distributor who spots them first will issue a defect notice with a deadline.
