When does a sagging, swinging or sparking overhead service line become an emergency? The moment it sparks, smokes, clashes with another wire or hangs low enough to touch, treat it as live and dangerous: stay well clear, keep everyone away and call your distributor, or 000 if there is fire or immediate danger to life. A gentle, even sag on a hot day is usually normal, but a line that has visibly dropped, swings freely in wind or has pulled away from the house needs a Level 2 electrician before it fails completely.

Your overhead service line is the span of cable running from the street network to the point of attachment on your house or private pole. The key thing to understand is that this span works hard. It hangs in the weather all year, carries mechanical tension between two fixed points, and its insulation cops UV every day of its life. Most service line emergencies are simply old age plus one bad storm.
2. Sagging: what is normal and what is not
Conductors stretch slightly in heat, so a service line sits a little lower on a 40 degree afternoon than on a winter morning. An even, gentle curve that has looked the same for years is generally fine.
What is not fine is change. If the line suddenly hangs lower after a storm, the point of attachment may be pulling out of the fascia or the pole may be leaning. If the line now sits low over a driveway, trampoline or pool area, it may be under the clearance heights the rules require, and that is exactly the kind of thing that attracts a defect notice. 3. Swinging: the wind test
A healthy span moves a little in strong wind. A failing one swings freely, and every swing does damage. Two things to watch for. First, conductor clash: separate wires slapping together in gusts, which shows up as flickering lights on windy days and sometimes as audible cracks from outside. Second, contact with vegetation: a branch rubbing the line strips insulation a little more with every gust. 4. Sparking: the emergency stage
Sparks, arcing sounds, buzzing at the point of attachment or a burnt smell near the meter box mean the fault has arrived. Treat the line and anything it touches as live. Keep at least 8 metres clear, exactly as you would for a fallen power line, because a failing span can drop without warning. Call 000 first if there is fire or a person in danger, otherwise call your distributor, then a Level 2 electrician for the repair itself. 5. Whose problem is it?
The split is simpler than most people expect. The street network, including the pole on the nature strip, belongs to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. The service line to your house and everything from the point of attachment onwards is private, which generally makes repairs your responsibility, arranged through a Level 2 electrician. No. Never touch, tie, hook or prop a service line, even with dry timber or rope. The insulation on an ageing span cannot be trusted, and the line is live. Secure pets and people instead, and leave the line to a Level 2 crew.
