After the Flood: How Power Gets Safely Reconnected to a Flood Affected Home

Power does not come back to a flood affected home by flicking the main switch. Here is the safe reconnection sequence, what usually needs replacing, and who handles each step between the network, a Level 2 electrician and your insurer.

How does power get reconnected to a home after a flood? In a set order: the supply is isolated, the installation dries out, a licensed electrician inspects and tests every affected circuit, damaged gear is repaired or replaced, and only then is the home reconnected. Skipping steps is how flood recoveries turn into fires and shocks, which is why nobody, including the network, will simply switch a wet house back on.

1. Why you cannot just switch back on

Flood water is not clean water. It carries silt, sewage and salts that stay inside switchgear and conduits after the visible water is gone, conducting electricity where it should never go. A safety switch that has been under water may sit there looking normal and simply not trip when someone's life depends on it. That is why the rule after any inundation is absolute: the installation stays dead until it is inspected and tested, exactly as with storm water in a switchboard.

2. Step one: safe isolation

In a major event, Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy usually isolate flooded areas at the network level for exactly this reason. If your property flooded in isolation, or you are returning before the network has acted, do not wade in to reach the main switch. A board that is wet, or was, can be live in ways you cannot see. 3. Step two: drying out and honest triage

Once the site is safe, the installation needs to dry, and the triage begins. As a rule of thumb, anything with contacts, springs or electronics that went under water is replaced rather than salvaged: power points, light switches, safety switches, circuit breakers, the switchboard itself if it was submerged. Hard wired appliances like ovens and hot water systems need their own assessment. Enclosed cabling sometimes survives, but nobody should promise that before testing.

4. Step three: inspection and testing

Before anything is re energised, a licensed electrician tests the installation circuit by circuit. The core of it is insulation resistance testing, which in plain English asks one question: is electricity staying inside the cables where it belongs? Circuits that pass can be returned to service. Circuits that fail are isolated and repaired. A formal electrical safety inspection produces the written record you will want for the insurer and, if the damage was serious, for the distributor.

5. Step four: repairs, paperwork, reconnection

With repairs done, the paperwork closes the loop: compliance certification for the electrical work, and where the network connection itself was affected, notification through the distributor's process so the property can be reconnected. Better, but not safe. Any circuit whose fittings or cabling went under water needs testing before it is used, and submerged power points are replaced as a matter of course. The dry circuits upstairs can often be returned to service quickly once tested.

Will the network reconnect my street automatically once the water recedes?

The network restores the street when it is safe, but a property that was inundated generally is not re energised until an electrician has confirmed the installation is safe. That is a protection, not a punishment.

Is my solar system safe after a flood?

Treat it with the same respect as the switchboard. Panels on the roof are usually fine, but a flooded inverter or battery must not be touched or restarted until it is inspected. Isolate nothing yourself if the equipment is wet; let the electrician do it.
