Power Outage in Sydney? How to Get Power Restored Fast

Lost power in Sydney and need it restored fast? Start at your switchboard: if the main switch or a safety switch has tripped, resetting it once may bring everything back in seconds. If the board looks fine and your neighbours are dark too, it is a network outage and your distributor will restore it. If the fault is on your side of the connection point, a Level 2 electrician can repair the damage and restore your power 24/7.

1. Check your switchboard before you call anyone

Open the switchboard and look for any switch sitting in the off position or halfway between on and off. Switch it fully off, then back on, once only.

2. Work out whether it is just your place or the whole street

Look outside. If streetlights and neighbouring houses are also out, the problem is in the network, not your wiring. Report it to Ausgrid on 13 13 88 or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 and check their online outage maps for a restoration estimate. 3. Signs the fault is on your side of the connection point

If your neighbours have power and your switchboard will not stay on, the fault is likely somewhere in your own installation. Common culprits include a damaged overhead service line, ageing consumer mains, a deteriorated meter box or a failing private power pole.

Warning signs worth mentioning when you call: burnt smells at the switchboard, buzzing, blackened fuses, power in only part of the house, or visible damage to the cable that runs from the street to your roof. 4. Why restoring power is usually Level 2 ASP work

A general electrician cannot legally work on the cables that connect your home to the network. Repairs to service lines, consumer mains and metering equipment, and any disconnection or reconnection of supply, must be done by an accredited Level 2 ASP under the NSW Service and Installation Rules.
