Solar Inverter Compliance Plates and Labels: What AS 4777.2 Requires Installers to Display
What do all those plates and stickers on your solar inverter actually mean? They are compliance requirements, not branding. Section 7 of AS 4777.2 requires every inverter to carry its ratings plainly and permanently marked, in English, in a spot that stays visible after installation, and a compliant system adds shutdown procedures and switchboard labels on top. If an installer skipped the labelling, it is fair to ask what else they skipped.

- What must be on the inverter itself? A permanent rating plate covering voltage, current, frequency and rated power for each port, plus the protective class, topology and IP rating, all visible after the unit is mounted.
- Do the markings have to be in English? Yes. Other languages can appear as well, but the required markings and documentation must be in English.
- What warns about external equipment? If the inverter needs an external RCD or other ancillary gear to comply, that requirement must be marked on the inverter, with RCD warnings in lettering at least 5mm high.
- What about a shutdown procedure? The system must display a shutdown procedure next to and visible from the equipment being operated, using the same names as the device labels.

1. The rating plate: your inverter's passport
Every compliant inverter carries a plate stating what it is and what it can do: nominal voltage and current for each port, frequency, rated apparent power, protective class, whether it is isolated or non isolated, and its IP rating against dust and water. The details must be plainly and permanently marked somewhere that remains clearly visible once the unit is on the wall.
That last part matters more than it sounds. An inverter squeezed into a cupboard with its plate against the wall fails the intent of the rule, because inspectors, electricians and emergency services rely on reading it in place. The plate is also how anyone can confirm the installed model matches the one on the connection approval, which pairs with the settings story in why your solar system talks to the grid the way it does.
2. Warning markings that earn their keep
Beyond the ratings, AS 4777.2 requires specific warnings where they apply. If the inverter needs an external RCD to comply, the unit must say so prominently, including the type and rating, in lettering at least 5mm high. Inverters designed for closed electrical operating areas must warn that they are not suitable for homes.
Demand response capability gets marked too, so it is clear which remote control modes the unit supports. Ports are labelled for what they are, PV, battery, grid or load, which keeps a future electrician from guessing at a wall of identical terminals.
3. The labels beyond the inverter
A compliant installation carries labelling well past the inverter itself. A shutdown procedure must be displayed adjacent to and visible from the equipment used to shut the system down, with every device named exactly as its label reads. Your switchboards join in as well. The board the system connects to, and the boards upstream, must be labelled to show an alternative supply exists, what it feeds and where it is controlled, with batteries flagged where installed. 4. The paperwork behind the plates
Marking and documentation travel together. The inverter must come with documentation for safe installation, operation and maintenance, and the completed system should hand you a manual covering equipment details, shutdown and isolation procedures, commissioning records and warranty information. The labels also need to match the approval your distributor gave the system, because the approved inverter model and settings are part of the connection conditions. 5. What missing labels tell you
Labels are the cheapest part of a solar job, which is exactly why missing ones are a red flag. An installer who would not spend ten minutes on shutdown signage may also have rushed the earthing, the isolators or the settings file. Missing or wrong labelling is a common finding on defect notices involving solar equipped switchboards, and it is entirely avoidable.
