What makes a solar battery installation compliant in NSW? Three things have to line up: the equipment and wiring must meet the Australian Standards that cover each part of the system, the person designing and installing it must hold the right accreditation for battery work, and your distributor must approve the system in writing before it is connected to the network. Miss any one of those and you risk a defect notice, a refused connection or a voided warranty.

1. The standards stack, and what each one covers
No single rulebook covers a battery system, so compliance is a stack. AS/NZS 3000 governs all the fixed wiring. AS 5033 covers the solar array on the roof, which we unpack in AS 5033 explained without the jargon. AS 4777.2 covers how the inverter behaves on the grid, explained in why your solar system talks to the grid the way it does. And AS/NZS 5139 is the dedicated battery standard, covering where a battery can be located, the clearances around it, and the signage and isolation it needs. 2. Your distributor's rules
The Service and Installation Rules of NSW treat battery storage the same way as other small scale generation connected through an inverter. That means the battery must be declared on the connection application, the inverter and protection equipment must be approved in writing before connection, and the system must stay isolated from the network until compliant metering is installed. 3. Installer accreditation
The CEC guidelines are blunt on this: a grid connected battery system must be designed and installed by an accredited person who holds grid connected battery accreditation, not just solar accreditation. 4. How the inverter keeps the system inside the rules
A battery inverter is not just a box that charges and discharges. Under AS 4777.2 it enforces the limits your distributor approved: if export rises above the set limit, output winds back within 15 seconds, and if a hard limit is breached the inverter disconnects within 5 seconds. Those behaviours are why the distributor wants the exact inverter make, model and settings on the application, and why nobody should change inverter settings after commissioning without approval.

5. The supply side work most quotes forget
Batteries add real current to your switchboard, and many Sydney boards are already full. A compliant install often needs dedicated protection, upgraded cabling between the board and the battery, and sometimes a switchboard upgrade or power supply upgrade before the battery can go in.
