Rooftop Solar Safety Checklist: What a CEC-Compliant Installer Checks Before Switch-On
What does a CEC compliant installer check before switching your solar on? A proper switch on is the last step of a documented checklist: the accredited installer must have supervised the job at set up, mid installation and commissioning, tested every string for continuity, polarity, voltage and insulation resistance, proven the isolators work, and handed you a system manual with a shutdown procedure. If your installer's commissioning consisted of flicking a switch and leaving, something was skipped.

1. The right person, actually on the roof
Compliance starts with who does the work. Under the CEC guidelines an accredited person can only sign off a system they installed or genuinely supervised, with attendance required at job set up, the mid installation check and testing and commissioning. The guidelines even cap sign offs at two complete installations per accredited person per day, a rule aimed squarely at the volume operators who sign paperwork for roofs they never saw. 2. On the roof: mounting and penetrations
Before wiring is even looked at, the physical installation gets checked: the mounting frame matches the engineering for wind loading, tiles sit flat after brackets go in so the roof keeps its weather seal, there is clearance under the array for the roof to self clean, and every cable or conduit penetration has a proper collar flashing rather than a blob of silicone. These are the checks that decide whether your roof still keeps water out in five years.
3. DC wiring and isolators
The DC side carries serious voltage in daylight, so the wiring rules for solar in AS/NZS 5033 are strict about it. The installer verifies cable runs inside the building are protected in the right conduit, ceiling space wiring stays within permitted zones, there is a means of isolation at the inverter, and any rooftop isolator is mounted so weather and fire risk are managed. 4. Commissioning tests, recorded not guessed
Before the system goes live the installer tests and records string continuity, earthing, the voltage and polarity of every string, and insulation resistance, and proves the isolator operates correctly under load. Reversed polarity or a damaged cable found now costs minutes; found after switch on it can mean a fried inverter or a fault that hides for years. The results belong in your commissioning records, which is how a future electrician can tell a healthy system from a lemon.
5. Grid settings and network approval
Your system also has to be right on the grid side. The inverter settings must match what your distributor approved, including the export limit, which the inverter enforces automatically under AS/NZS 4777.2. 6. Handover: the paperwork that proves it
A compliant handover includes a system manual covering equipment ratings, a wiring diagram, the shutdown procedure, a maintenance timetable and the commissioning records, with the shutdown procedure also displayed at the equipment, including the warning that switching the DC isolator off does not de energise the panels themselves. You should also receive the electrical compliance certificate for the work. No manual, no shutdown sign, no test results: three red flags that the job was rushed.

How do I check my installer is actually accredited?
Ask for their accreditation number and verify it through Solar Accreditation Australia's public register. The person named must be the one installing or supervising, not just the company's licence holder.
What if my installer never gave me a system manual?
Ask for it in writing; providing one is a compliance requirement, not a courtesy. If nothing arrives, an independent inspection can document what was installed and pick up anything else that was skipped.

My system was installed years ago. Is it worth re checking?
Yes, especially for early systems with rooftop DC isolators, which have a known water ingress history. A periodic inspection of isolators, penetrations and cabling is cheap insurance for a roof mounted electrical system.
