How do you make a home EV ready before you even own an EV? By spending small money while the walls and trenches are already open: a conduit run from the switchboard to where the car will park, spare space on the board, and supply with enough headroom to add a charger later. Done mid-renovation these provisions cost a fraction of what the same work costs as a standalone job years later.

1. Run the conduit while everything is open

The most expensive part of many EV charger installs is not the charger, it is the cable route: getting a heavy cable from the switchboard to the parking spot through finished walls, ceilings or paving. During a renovation that route is sitting wide open. A length of conduit with a draw wire, from the board to the garage wall, costs very little and turns a future install into a simple pull-and-connect job.

2. Leave room on the switchboard

A dedicated EV charging circuit needs physical space on the board for its protection. If your renovation already includes a switchboard upgrade, ask for spare ways rather than a board sized exactly to today's circuits. The difference in cost is small; the difference when the charger arrives is a connection job instead of a second board upgrade.

3. Check your maximum demand headroom

Every home has a supply capacity, and every appliance you add eats into it. Maximum demand is the calculation electricians use to work out whether the supply can take another major load, and an EV charger is one of the biggest loads a house can gain. 4. Decide the single versus three phase question once

Single phase charging suits most commuting patterns: overnight charging adds plenty of range even at modest power. Three phase charges faster and future-proofs a household heading all-electric, but it is a supply upgrade with real cost. 5. Plan around where the car actually parks

Chargers work best short and close: mount the unit near the car's charge port side, keep the cable run from the board as direct as possible, and think about a second conduit if a two-EV future is plausible. Off-street parking behind the house, a detached garage or a long driveway all change the answer, and they are all cheaper to solve during landscaping than after it.

6. Sort the metering while the sparky is there

Appendix C is a guide — the standard permits other assessment methods, and your electricity distributor or the NSW Service & Installation Rules may impose additional requirements. Ratings entered in watts or kilowatts are converted at 230 V (single-phase) or 400 V (three-phase).
