EV Charger Funding for NSW Businesses: How Kick-start Covers Up to Half Your Charging Costs
Does the NSW Government help businesses pay for EV chargers? Yes. Under the Kick-start stream of the EV fleets incentive, NSW co-funds smart charging ports alongside each funded vehicle: up to $3,000 to $6,000 for an AC port depending on vehicle size, and half the cost of DC fast charging up to $60,000 per port. The condition is that chargers are claimed together with vehicle incentives in the same application, with one port per funded vehicle. The current round closes 30 November 2026 or when funds run out.

1. How the Charger Funding Works
Kick-start treats chargers as part of the fleet package, not a separate grant. When you apply for vehicle incentives through the FY26 round, you nominate the smart charging ports you want funded at the same time, up to one port for every funded vehicle. The funding covers the purchase and the installation, up to the cap for each port type. That distinction matters, because on commercial sites the installation is often the bigger number.

2. What Each Port Type Attracts
AC wallbox ports carry fixed caps that rise with vehicle size, while DC fast charging is co-funded at 50 per cent of cost. The graphic below shows the full set of figures.
3. What Is Covered and What Is Not
The funding is generous but has firm edges. You cannot use it to build public charging on its own, you cannot claim more ports than vehicles, and anything above the per-port cap is your cost. It is also worth knowing that DC units above 60kW are reserved for heavy vehicle fleets.

Here is the part that catches fleets out. A single 22kW AC charger draws about as much as a small house, and a 60kW DC unit much more again. Put six of them in a depot and you have changed the site's electrical profile completely. Before locking charger numbers into your application, get the basics answered: can the switchboard take the new circuits, is the incoming supply big enough or is a power supply upgrade needed, and does the site need three phase charging at all. For most light fleets that park overnight, AC ports at up to $3,000 each cover a large share of a straightforward installation, and vehicles wake up full every morning. DC makes sense where vehicles turn around during the day, and for trucks, which is why the biggest DC co-funding is reserved for heavy fleets. Can I use Kick-start to install a charger at home?
No. Kick-start is for business fleets. There is currently no standalone NSW rebate for a home charger, but there are other savings, covered in our guide to EV charger rebates and grants in NSW.
Does the funding cover trenching, switchboard work and cabling?
Installation costs count toward each port's capped amount, so simple sites often land within the cap. Major site works like a new switchboard or a bigger incoming supply usually sit outside it, which is why an early site assessment matters.
Do the chargers have to be smart chargers?
Yes. The program funds smart charging ports, which can manage charging times and talk to load management systems. That is good practice on a commercial site anyway.
Who can legally install a commercial EV charger?
