My Circuit Breaker Is Hot: Why It Happens and What to Do

Why is your circuit breaker hot? Mild warmth on a working breaker is normal, but a breaker that is genuinely hot to the touch is warning you about one of four things: an overloaded circuit, loose connections inside the board, a breaker that is failing with age, or a breaker that was never the right size for the circuit. 1. An overloaded circuit

Breakers carry current, and current makes heat. When a split system, fridge and microwave all share one line, the breaker spends its day near its limit and runs warm to hot. Persistent overload warmth is the circuit telling you it needs splitting or upgrading, not a bigger breaker.

3. A breaker that is failing

Breakers age like anything mechanical. An old unit can develop internal resistance and run hot, and worse, it can fail to trip when it should.
