Electrician After a Natural Disaster in Sydney: What to Expect
What can an electrician actually do for you after a storm, flood or bushfire? A Level 2 electrician makes the damaged installation safe, repairs the cables that connect your home to the network, inspects anything that got wet or burnt, and restores power once it is safe. General electricians handle the wiring inside your home, but the connection side of disaster repairs is Level 2 ASP work.
⚡ Quick Answers: electricians and natural disasters
- Who do I call first? For life threatening situations call 000. For network hazards call Ausgrid on 13 13 88 or Endeavour Energy on 131 003. For damage to your own installation, call a Level 2 electrician.
- Can I turn the power back on after a flood? No. A switchboard or wiring that has been wet must be inspected and tested before it is re energised.
- Who repairs my damaged service line? The distributor fixes the network. The cable and equipment on your side of the connection point is yours to repair, using a Level 2 ASP.
- What is a make safe? An emergency visit that isolates and secures damaged electrical equipment so your property is no longer hazardous, before full repairs are scoped.
- Will insurance cover it? Storm and disaster damage is commonly covered. A make safe report and compliance certificate from your electrician supports the claim.
1. What disasters do to home electrical systems
Storms bring down service lines and private power poles, and lightning surges can destroy switchboard equipment and appliances. Floodwater wrecks switchboards, wiring and power points from the inside, and the damage is often invisible until something fails. Bushfire heat destroys poles, aerial cables and meter enclosures even where the house itself survives.
If a tree has come down on your line or pole, our guide to a tree falling on your power pole covers the first hour step by step.
2. Safety first, before any electrician arrives
Treat every fallen wire as live and keep people and pets well away. Call 000 if there is fire or immediate danger to anyone. Do not wade through floodwater inside a house that still has supply connected, and do not reset tripped switches after water or fire damage.
Report network hazards to your distributor straight away. We keep the key numbers in one place in our post on Ausgrid emergency contacts for Sydney homeowners.
3. Who fixes what: the distributor or your electrician
Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy repair the poles and wires in the street. Everything past the point of connection, including your service line attachment, private pole, consumer mains, meter box and switchboard, is the property owner's responsibility. Our post on who to call when a service line is down explains the split in detail.

4. The make safe: stopping the danger fast
The first electrical job after a disaster is the make safe: isolating supply, disconnecting damaged sections, securing exposed cables and making the property safe to occupy or work in. Because a make safe usually involves the service line and the connection point, it must be done by a Level 2 ASP.
Once the site is safe, we scope the permanent repairs. For wind and lightning damage this is handled through our electrical storm damage service.
5. Inspection before reconnection
Anything that has been submerged, soaked or burnt has to be inspected and tested before power goes back on. Corroded terminals and water damaged insulation can pass a quick glance and still fail dangerously weeks later. A proper electrical safety inspection identifies what can be dried and retained, and what must be replaced, so the reconnection is safe and compliant with AS/NZS 3000.
6. Repairs, reconnection and the paperwork
Level 2 electricians can replace consumer mains and service lines, install a new private power pole where the old one is beyond saving, rebuild overhead service mains and reconnect supply without waiting on a separate contractor. You receive a compliance certificate for the work, and we can provide the reports and photos your insurer asks for.
If you live in a bushfire prone area, it is worth reading what SIRNSW says about bushfire management for your service line before the next season.

Natural disaster electrical FAQs (Sydney)
My house flooded. Can I use the power points once it dries out?
Not until they are inspected. Water leaves corrosion and contamination inside fittings, and faults can appear well after everything looks dry. See our electrical safety inspection service.
The storm pulled the cable off my roof. Who fixes it?
That attachment point and the cable to your switchboard are your responsibility, and repairing them is Level 2 work. We handle it under our emergency make safe service.
How fast can you get to me after a major storm?
We prioritise hazards and loss of supply, and in a widespread event we triage the worst damage first. Calling early with clear photos helps us scope the job before we arrive.
Does insurance pay for the make safe?
Most policies cover emergency make safe work after an insured event. We provide the report and invoices your insurer needs, but confirm cover with them first.
