Disconnect and Reconnect for Solar, Aircon and Roof Jobs: The Level 2 Step Every Trade Needs

Why does a solar install, an air conditioning job or a roof replacement sometimes need a separate disconnect and reconnect? Whenever a trade needs to work near or on your overhead service line, the property has to be safely disconnected from the network first, and only an accredited Level 2 ASP can legally carry that out. It is a short, planned job that runs alongside the main work rather than replacing it.

The bit of the job most trades don't expect

Roofers, solar installers and air conditioning technicians all work confidently at height and around cabling on your side of the switchboard. What catches people out is the overhead service line itself, the cable running from the street or pole to your point of attachment. That line stays live and belongs to the network, not to you or your property, so nobody except an accredited Level 2 ASP can work on it or near it while it is energised.

Roof replacement work

A full roof replacement often means removing sheeting or tiles right where the service line attaches to the house. If the point of attachment or the bracket needs to be temporarily removed and refitted, that is Level 2 ASP work, not roofing work. A good roofer will flag this early rather than reaching that section of roof and finding the job has stalled.

Solar panel installation near the service line

Most solar installs never touch the service line at all, but on some roofs the ideal panel layout runs close to where the line attaches. When that happens, the panels can't safely be fitted with the line live, so a short disconnect and reconnect is booked to let the solar team finish that section safely.

Air conditioning units and service line clearance

Outdoor aircon units are sometimes mounted on walls or platforms directly under or near the service line, and the installer needs enough clearance to lift and secure the unit safely. Where that clearance does not exist without moving or temporarily de energising the line, a Level 2 ASP handles the disconnect so the aircon team can work safely, then reconnects once the unit is fitted.

Why it's Level 2 ASP work

Disconnecting a property from the Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy network, and safely reconnecting it afterwards, requires accreditation on top of a standard trade licence. A Level 2 ASP is the only person who can legally:

• De energise the service line supplying your property
• Carry out or supervise work required near the point of attachment
• Confirm the line is safe before another trade works nearby
• Reconnect and restore supply once the main work is finished

This is exactly the same accreditation boundary that applies to tiger tail installation for construction and crane work, just triggered by a different trade.
