Why Solar and Air Conditioning Installers Call a Level 2 Electrician Before They Can Finish the Job

Why do solar and air conditioning installers sometimes have to call in a Level 2 electrician? Their trade licence covers the equipment they install, not the connection between your property and the electricity network. If a solar system or a large air conditioner needs a meter change, extra switchboard capacity or new consumer mains, that step legally belongs to an accredited Level 2 ASP, not the installer holding the job.

The licence line most people never notice

A solar installer and an air conditioning installer both hold real, valid trade licences, and most of their work never touches anything beyond your existing circuits. But Australian electrical licensing draws a hard line at your point of attachment, the spot where the network's supply connects to your property. Everything from there back to the street, plus your consumer mains and metering, is governed separately under the Service and Installation Rules of NSW, and only an accredited Level 2 ASP can legally work on it.

Most jobs never reach that line. It only becomes relevant when the new system draws enough extra load, or needs a different metering arrangement, that the existing supply into the property is no longer enough.

Where solar installations hit the boundary

A CEC accredited solar installer is fully qualified to design and install the panels, inverter and wiring on your side of the switchboard. Where it gets complicated is metering and export. Many solar systems need a bidirectional smart meter to record what you export back to the grid, and in some cases the existing service or consumer mains cannot safely carry the added capacity once a large battery is added. Both of those steps sit with a Level 2 ASP, not the solar installer, and the two trades typically coordinate so the customer only has to deal with one booking process rather than two separate jobs.

Where air conditioning installations hit the boundary

Ducted systems are the most common trigger. A large multi zone system can draw more than an older switchboard was ever designed to handle, especially in homes still running a fuse based board or a dated single phase supply. Before the aircon installer can safely connect the new unit, the property may need a switchboard upgrade or, in some cases, a single phase to three phase upgrade to spread the load properly. None of that is aircon work. It is Level 2 ASP work, and a good installer will flag it before the day of installation rather than discovering it on site.

Why it's Level 2 ASP work

Anything touching your point of attachment, consumer mains or metering connection to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy requires accreditation on top of a standard electrical licence. Specifically, only a Level 2 ASP can legally:

• Disconnect and reconnect your property's network supply to allow safe works
• Install or upgrade consumer mains between the point of attachment and your switchboard
• Lodge a connection or metering application with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy
• Coordinate a bidirectional meter installation for solar export
