Disconnecting and Reconnecting Power Safely During a Renovation: The Level 2 Process Explained
How do you disconnect and reconnect power safely during a renovation? You book a Level 2 accredited service provider (ASP) to temporarily disconnect your service line before demolition or major electrical work starts, then reconnect and test the installation once the work is done. Your builder or a standard electrician cannot legally touch the service line itself. In NSW, disconnection and reconnection of a service is classed as contestable service work, so it must be done by a Level 2 ASP who then notifies your network within two working days.

1. Why renovations often need a temporary disconnection
Any project that touches the structure carrying your electrical service usually needs the power isolated at the network side, not just at the main switch. Common examples include demolishing or moving the wall that holds the point of attachment, re-cladding or re-roofing near the service line, relocating the meter box, and upgrading an old switchboard where the mains must be disconnected to work safely.
Turning off the main switch only kills power past the switchboard. The service line and the supply side of your meter stay live, which is exactly where the danger sits for builders, scaffolders and roofers.
2. Who is legally allowed to do the work
Under the Service and Installation Rules of NSW, connection services can only be provided by accredited service providers authorised by your network. Disconnecting and reconnecting a service, whether overhead or underground, is on the list of contestable service work reserved for Level 2 electricians.
That applies in both Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy areas. If you are not sure which network your property is on, you can check your network area in seconds with our postcode checker. It also pays to verify your electrician's Level 2 ASP accreditation before you book, because an unaccredited operator cannot lawfully reconnect you.
3. The disconnect and reconnect process, step by step
A typical renovation disconnection runs like this:
- Site check and plan. The Level 2 ASP confirms what the builder needs isolated, where the service enters the property, and whether the consumer mains or point of attachment will move.
- Temporary disconnection. The service is disconnected at the network connection point so the work area is genuinely dead, not just switched off.
- The building work happens. Walls move, roofs come off, the meter box is relocated, whatever the project needs.
- Reconnection and testing. Before re-energising, the ASP tests polarity, insulation and earthing. Power is only restored once everything passes.
- Paperwork. The ASP lodges the NOSW with your network within two working days so the connection records stay accurate.
4. When a renovation triggers a bigger upgrade
The Rules are clear on one point that catches many renovators: if your alterations push the maximum demand of the installation beyond what the existing service and consumer mains can carry, those cables must be replaced at the customer's cost. A big extension with ducted air conditioning, an induction cooktop and an EV charger can easily do that to a 60 year old single phase supply.
That is why we often bundle a renovation disconnect with a power supply upgrade or a single phase to three phase upgrade. Doing it while the service is already disconnected saves a second visit and a second shutdown. Our guide to what changes in a three phase upgrade covers the details.
5. Timing it around your build
Most builders want power off first thing in the morning and back on before the crew leaves. A straightforward same day disconnect and reconnect is realistic when nothing else changes. Add a switchboard replacement, relocated meter box or new consumer mains and you should plan for the reconnection to follow the building work by a day or more, with temporary arrangements in between if needed. If your project also involves a smart meter upgrade, coordinating the retailer's meter installer with the Level 2 work avoids a second outage.
Why it's Level 2 ASP work
The service line between the street and your connection point is part of the network, and it stays live at 230 volts even with every switch in your house off. Only accredited Level 2 ASPs are authorised to work on it, and only they can lawfully re-energise an installation and certify the testing behind it. Anyone else doing this work is both illegal and genuinely dangerous.
How High Demand Electrical helps
High Demand Electrical is a Level 2 accredited service provider working across Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy areas of Sydney. For renovations we handle the temporary disconnection, coordinate timing with your builder, complete any consumer mains, switchboard or metering upgrades while the power is off, then test, reconnect and lodge the NOSW. One crew, one shutdown, no waiting on the network for weeks.
Renovation Power Disconnection FAQs (Sydney)
Can my builder or regular electrician disconnect the power?
No. They can isolate circuits inside the house, but the service line and anything on the supply side of the meter is Level 2 ASP territory under the Service and Installation Rules of NSW. See our disconnect and reconnect services.
How long will my power be off?
For a simple disconnect and reconnect, usually a single day. If the job includes new mains, a switchboard or a relocated meter box, expect the reconnection to follow the building work rather than the same afternoon.
Do I need a new switchboard as part of my renovation?
Only if your board is unsafe, full, or the new demand exceeds its rating. We assess this before quoting. See switchboard upgrades.
Is the process different with Ausgrid versus Endeavour Energy?
The Level 2 process is the same because both networks operate under the Service and Installation Rules of NSW, but each has its own procedural requirements the ASP must follow. Check which network you are on with our postcode checker.
