How to Choose a Level 2 Electrician in Sydney: Checklist, ASP Levels and Prices (2026)
Last updated: 9 October 2026 · High Demand Electrical, Level 2 ASP, Licence 397193C
How do you choose a Level 2 electrician in Sydney? Choose one who can show you five things before any work starts: an ASP Level 2 accreditation covering your type of job, a current NSW electrical contractor licence, public and products liability insurance, written authorisation from your distributor (Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy), and a written warranty. For most homes you need Level 2, not Level 1 or Level 3, and most Level 2 jobs in Sydney cost between about $300 and $5,000+, plus distributor fees.

What Should You Check Before Hiring a Level 2 Electrician?
Work through this checklist before you accept a quote. A genuine Level 2 provider can answer every point in one phone call, and the networks ask for exactly the same proof.
- ASP level and class. Ask for the company's ASP number and which Level 2 classes it holds: 2A (disconnect and reconnect), 2B (underground services), 2C (overhead services) and 2D (energising service equipment). An overhead service line repair needs 2C; an underground mains job needs 2B. Check the business appears on the Level 2 provider list published by NSW Climate and Energy Action.
- Licence lookup. Search the business name, licence number or ABN on the Service NSW "Check a builder or tradesperson licence" tool. The licence should be current, in the business's name, and cover electrical work. ASP accreditation sits on top of a licence; it never replaces it.
- Insurance. Ask for a certificate of currency for public and products liability insurance. Under the ASP scheme, that policy must meet the minimum for the accreditation level and name the Electricity Distributors of NSW as an interested party.
- Network authorisation. Accreditation comes from the NSW Government, but each distributor separately authorises who can work on its network. Find out whether you are on Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, then confirm the electrician is authorised on that network. Authorisation on one does not carry over to the other.
- Warranties. Get the workmanship warranty in writing, and ask which manufacturer warranties apply to meters, boards and cable. Residential building work in NSW also carries statutory warranties of six years for major defects and two years for other defects under the Home Building Act 1989.
- Itemised quote. The quote should separate ASP labour, materials, and distributor or metering fees, and state who lodges the network paperwork and the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW).
- Testing before energising. Ask how they test before connecting supply. The answer should include polarity, phase rotation, insulation resistance and earthing. Any offer to "just flick it on" is a red flag.
Our step-by-step guide on how to verify a Level 2 ASP's accreditation covers the questions to ask in more detail.
What Is the Difference Between ASP Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3?
The three levels are different scopes of work under the NSW Accredited Service Provider scheme, not skill rankings. Level 3 designs network extensions, Level 1 builds them, and Level 2 connects individual properties to the network.
For a deeper explanation of each level, read Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 electricians explained.
How Much Does a Level 2 Electrician Cost in Sydney?
Most Level 2 jobs in Sydney land between about $300 and $5,000 or more. Simple reconnections sit at the bottom of that range; private power poles, overhead to underground conversions and three phase upgrades sit at the top.
*Indicative Sydney metro ranges for ASP labour and standard materials, as of October 2026. Excavation, council permits, asbestos removal and Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy fees are extra unless stated. A site assessment confirms the final price.
Distributor fees for applications, metering and connections are set by the network and passed through unchanged, so ask for them as a separate line item. For job-by-job breakdowns, see our guides to Level 2 electrician costs, three phase upgrade costs, meter relocation costs and private power pole costs.
What Are the Red Flags When Choosing a Level 2 Electrician?
- They call themselves "Level 2" but cannot give you an ASP number.
- They hold Level 2 classes that do not match your job, such as only 2A for an underground mains replacement.
- They are not authorised on your distributor's network.
- The quote is a single lump sum with no distributor fees shown, which usually means extra charges later.
- They suggest skipping testing, the CCEW or the network notification.
- The price is far below every other quote. On network work, that is rarely a real saving.
