What is earthing and bonding in your home? Earthing gives electricity a safe, deliberate path into the ground when something goes wrong, so protective devices can cut the power fast. Bonding connects the metal parts of your home, like conductive water pipes, to that same earthing system so no dangerous voltage can sit between two things you might touch at once. 1. Earthing: the safe path for fault current
Picture a faulty appliance where a live wire touches its metal case. Without earthing, the case sits at 230 volts waiting for someone to touch it. With earthing, the fault current flows straight down the protective earth conductor, the circuit breaker or safety switch sees it, and the power is gone in a fraction of a second.
That is the entire job of the green and yellow wires running through your walls: do nothing all year, then carry a fault perfectly the one moment it matters. It is also why earthing faults are so dangerous, because nothing looks or behaves differently until the day the safety net is needed.

2. The MEN system: how Australian homes are earthed
Australia earths its installations with the Multiple Earthed Neutral system, described in Section 5 of AS/NZS 3000. Two connections define it. At your main switchboard, the earth bar is linked to the incoming neutral, which gives fault current a low resistance path back to the supply transformer so protective devices trip quickly. And an earth electrode, typically a copper clad stake near your switchboard, ties the whole system to the general mass of earth.
Both connections have to be sized, made and located correctly, and the MEN link must stay accessible for testing. It is one of the things checked whenever a switchboard upgrade is done, and older boards frequently reveal undersized or corroded earthing when they are opened up.

3. Bonding: keeping all your metal at the same voltage
Earthing looks after your electrical equipment. Bonding looks after everything else made of metal. AS/NZS 3000 requires conductive water piping that is accessible inside the building and continuously conductive to the ground outside to be bonded to the earthing system, with the connection made as close as practicable to where the pipe enters the building.
The reason is simple: if a fault or a network problem raises the voltage on one metal object, you do not want a different voltage sitting on the pipe next to it. Bonding clamps everything together electrically so there is nothing to feel between the tap and the sink. Metal piping for gas and other services that sits against electrical equipment gets the same treatment.

4. The warning signs worth acting on
A tingle from a tap, a shower fitting or a metal appliance is the classic symptom of an earthing or bonding problem, and it deserves a same day phone call, because the difference between a tingle and a serious shock can be one more fault somewhere else. Other prompts to get things tested: a switchboard from the fuse era, renovations that replaced metal pipes with plastic (which can quietly change what needs bonding), rust or a loose clamp on the earth stake, or a defect notice mentioning earthing.

Some homeowners assume safety switches make earthing old fashioned. It is the opposite: they are designed around each other. Earthing gives fault current somewhere safe to go, and the RCD detects even a small leak and disconnects the circuit in milliseconds. Remove either one and the other's protection is weakened.
