What approvals do you need to install solar or a battery in Ausgrid territory? You need written connection approval from Ausgrid before your system is connected to the grid, on top of the electrical compliance paperwork every NSW installation needs. A good installer lodges the application for you, but plenty of Sydney homeowners only discover the paperwork exists when it holds up their switch on date. Here is what is actually in the pile.

1. Approval comes before installation, not after
The Service and Installation Rules of NSW are blunt about the order of operations: the inverter and its protection equipment must be approved in writing by the distributor before the system is connected. In practice, reputable installers lodge the Ausgrid connection application before the panels ever touch your roof, because an unapproved system cannot legally be energised no matter how neatly it is installed.

2. First, confirm you are actually in Ausgrid territory
Ausgrid covers most of eastern, northern and inner Sydney, while Endeavour Energy covers the west and south west. The paperwork, portals and some technical limits differ between them, so the first step is knowing whose forms you are filling in. 3. The size thresholds that change the paperwork
Under the Service and Installation Rules, the standard small scale process covers inverter systems up to 10kW per phase; anything larger moves into a negotiated approval with the distributor. There is a second threshold that surprises people: a single phase system over 5kW in an urban area must include voltage rise calculations with its application, showing the system will not push local voltage too high.
This is also where export limits enter the picture. If the local network is congested, approval may come with an export cap, or you can propose an export limited or zero export setup to speed approval along. 4. The meter has to be right before switch on
A solar or battery system must stay isolated from the grid until a compliant metering installation is in place. For most Sydney homes that means a smart meter capable of recording exports, arranged through your electricity retailer. If your board still has an old accumulation meter, build the meter upgrade into your project timeline early, because it is a common cause of systems sitting installed but switched off.
Older switchboards can also need work before a meter changeover, so a switchboard upgrade quote alongside your solar quote is often money well spent.

5. What a battery adds to the application
Ausgrid assesses your inverter's capacity and export behaviour, so battery storage must be declared in the connection application rather than added quietly later. The inverter itself must comply with AS 4777.2, the standard that governs how inverters behave on the grid, and it needs to be an approved model. Adding a battery to an existing approved system is a fresh change to your connection, and it usually means an updated application. Budget time for that, not just the install day.
