Leaning Power Pole: What to Do Right Now

What should you do if you notice a power pole leaning? Keep everyone well back from the pole and anything attached to it, including stay wires and the ground around its base, and treat it as urgent rather than something to keep an eye on. Then work out whether it is a private pole or a network pole, since that determines who you actually call: a private pole is reported to a Level 2 ASP for urgent assessment, while a network pole is reported directly to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy's emergency line.

1. Keep people and pets well clear immediately

A leaning pole has already lost some of the support it was designed to have, whether that is soil compaction, a rotted base, or damage to the footing, and there is no reliable way to judge from the ground how much further it might move or when. Keep people, pets and vehicles away from the pole itself, any stay wires anchoring it, and the ground immediately around its base, which can also be unstable. If the pole is near a driveway, footpath or place children play, treat that access as closed until it has been assessed, not just supervised.

2. Work out whether it is a private pole or a network pole

This matters because it changes who is responsible for arranging the fix. A private power pole sits on private property and belongs to the property owner, who is responsible for its maintenance and any repair. A network pole belongs to the distributor, either Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy depending on where you are in Sydney, and sits in the street reserve or an easement rather than on private land. Network poles usually carry an identification tag or plate, and they are generally positioned to serve multiple properties rather than a single one. 3. If it is a network pole

Report it directly to the distributor's emergency line straight away. Ausgrid can be reached on 13 13 88 and Endeavour Energy on 131 003, and either should be treated as an emergency report, not a routine enquiry, given a leaning pole can fail further with no warning. If there is any immediate danger, such as sparking, a downed line, or the pole visibly continuing to move, call 000 first. Do not wait for a scheduled inspection window, and do not attempt to rope off or mark the area yourself if that means going closer than a safe distance.

4. If it is a private pole

5. What actually causes a pole to start leaning

The most common causes in Sydney are ground movement or erosion around the base, root damage from a nearby tree disturbing the footing, a timber pole base that has rotted or been attacked by termites, storm and wind loading that has shifted the pole slightly, or a vehicle or machinery impact that was not reported at the time. 6. Why this is never a DIY or general trade job
