What Are the Electrical Requirements for a Hair Salon or Beauty Studio Fit Out in Sydney?
What are the electrical requirements for a hair salon or beauty studio fit out in Sydney? A salon fit out needs dedicated circuits for high draw styling equipment, RCD protection on every socket outlet, enough switchboard capacity for multiple stations running at once, and correctly rated outlets near basins and wash areas. Most of the compliance problems we see trace back to a shop fit out that treated the space like a generic retail tenancy instead of the appliance heavy workspace it actually is.
1. Why a salon fit out is a heavier load than it looks
A retail shopfront's original switchboard is usually sized for lighting, a till, maybe an air conditioner and a handful of general power outlets. A hair salon or beauty studio puts a very different load profile through the same space: hairdryers and straighteners drawing meaningful continuous current at every station, UV lamps and sterilising equipment in treatment rooms, and often a washing machine or dryer for towels running in the background all day. None of this is unusual commercial equipment on its own, but stacked together across several stations it adds up to a genuinely different demand profile than the tenancy's original fit out was ever designed for.
This is the single most common issue our technicians find in salon fit outs: a switchboard that was perfectly adequate for the previous retail tenant and is now quietly overloaded by the new one.
2. Dedicated circuits per station, not shared power boards
The fix is straightforward in principle: dedicated circuits sized for the actual equipment at each station, rather than every chair sharing one general power circuit through a daisy chain of power boards. Power boards strung between styling chairs are both a tripping hazard on a busy salon floor and a common cause of nuisance circuit trips during a fully booked Saturday, exactly when a salon can least afford downtime.
Planning this properly means counting actual equipment per station, not just outlets: a hairdryer, a straightener or curling iron, clipper charging, and often a client side phone charging point. Four to six stations each drawing from their own correctly sized circuit, rather than all competing for one overloaded circuit breaker, is the difference between a salon that runs smoothly and one that trips out mid appointment.
3. RCD protection and basin or wash area outlets
Every socket outlet in a commercial fit out needs residual current device protection under AS/NZS 3000, and this matters even more around basins and wash areas where water and electrical equipment sit close together. Outlets near a wash basin need correct placement away from splash zones and RCD protection on the circuit, the same underlying safety principle that governs bathrooms in a home. Hair washing basins, colour mixing stations and any sink used during treatments all deserve the same treatment as a domestic bathroom would get, even though the standard's specific damp situation clauses are written with homes in mind rather than commercial basins.
If you are unsure whether your existing basin area setup is compliant, an electrical safety inspection is the quickest way to find out before it becomes a problem during a council or landlord inspection.
4. Treatment rooms, UV equipment and sterilisers
Beauty studios running UV curing lamps, LED treatment devices, sterilising units and heated towel cabinets often find these pieces of equipment are happier on their own dedicated circuit, away from the general power circuit used for phone chargers and incidental equipment. Several sterilising and UV devices running together on an undersized shared circuit is a common cause of nuisance tripping in treatment rooms, and it tends to happen at the worst possible moment, mid treatment, rather than conveniently between clients.
It is worth mapping out every piece of equipment used in each treatment room before a fit out or renovation, the same way you would for a medical or dental practice fit out or a childcare centre fit out, since beauty treatment rooms share more in common with these small, equipment dense tenancy types than with a standard retail shop.
5. Lighting that actually suits the work being done
Colour accurate lighting matters more in a salon than in almost any other retail fit out, since colour correction, makeup application and precision cutting all depend on it. This is a design consideration rather than a compliance one, but it is worth planning alongside the electrical work rather than as an afterthought, since adding dedicated lighting circuits after the rest of the fit out is finished is more disruptive and more expensive than including it from the start.
A good fit out plan separates general ceiling lighting from task lighting at the mirror or treatment bed, on its own switch, so the salon floor and individual stations can be lit differently depending on the time of day and the treatment being performed. If your studio is moving into an older retail tenancy, our guide on signs a switchboard needs replacing is worth checking against the existing board before you commit to a lighting and power layout on top of it.
Why it's Level 2 ASP work
Most salon fit out electrical work is standard licensed electrician territory within the existing supply. It becomes Level 2 ASP work the moment the overall load genuinely exceeds what the existing connection can safely support, which is common once a salon adds multiple treatment rooms, a laundry for towels and several high draw stations all under one roof. In that situation a power supply upgrade or switchboard upgrade assessed against your actual equipment list, rather than a guess at what the tenancy might need, is the right starting point before signing off on a bigger fit out.
How High Demand Electrical helps
High Demand Electrical is a licensed local team, not a call centre, and we regularly scope salon and beauty studio fit outs across Sydney's West, South West and Sutherland Shire. We will count your actual equipment load station by station, design dedicated circuits where they are genuinely needed, and confirm whether your existing switchboard has enough spare capacity before you commit to a lease fit out. If a prior fit out needs defect notice rectification before you can open, we will scope that work in the same visit rather than sending you to a second contractor.
