How to Safely Make Your Home Solar and Battery Ready
What does it take to make your home solar and battery ready? 1. Start at the switchboard
The switchboard is where a solar system physically lands: it needs space for the solar breaker and isolation, modern safety switches, and gear in good enough condition to pass inspection. Boards still running ceramic fuses, or with no spare ways, need a switchboard upgrade first, and it is worth adding surge protection while the board is open, because inverters and battery electronics are exactly the kind of equipment a storm surge destroys.
2. Sort the metering
Solar only pays when your meter can measure energy flowing out as well as in. That usually means a smart meter upgrade arranged through your retailer, configured for your feed in arrangement. Metering and connection work at the front of the installation is Level 2 territory, and doing it in the same window as the board work keeps the project to one visit instead of three.
3. Check the consumer mains have the capacity
The consumer mains carry everything between your connection point and the board, and solar plus a battery plus the EV charger you are quietly planning all lean on them. Undersized or ageing mains are the right thing to find before the system goes on the roof. 4. Test the earthing and wiring
Before installation we test earth resistance, insulation and voltage drop on the circuits that matter. Solar and battery systems depend on sound earthing for safety, and an old installation with degraded insulation is better discovered by a meter than by a fault. Anything marginal gets fixed before the panels arrive, not discovered by the solar installer's commissioning checklist.
5. Rough in the battery now
Even if the battery is a next year decision, readiness is cheap this year: a hybrid inverter or one that accepts a battery later, conduit run to the battery's future wall space, and room on the board for its protection. 6. Get the network approvals right
Every grid connected system needs the distributor's approval, and the process, paperwork and export limits differ between networks.
