What is prospective short circuit current, and why does your switchboard need to be rated for it? Prospective short circuit current is the maximum current that could flow if the live conductors at your switchboard were short circuited together, and in Sydney that can mean thousands of amps for a fraction of a second. The Service and Installation Rules of NSW require your installation to withstand that fault without damage, which is why switchboards and breakers carry a fault rating measured in kiloamps.

1. What happens in a short circuit, in plain terms

Normally your home draws current through appliances that resist the flow. In a short circuit, that resistance disappears and the only limit on the current is the network itself: the size of the local transformer and the length and thickness of the cables between it and your board.

Close to a substation the available fault current is enormous. Further away, it is smaller. That available worst case is the prospective short circuit current at your switchboard, and it exists whether or not a fault ever happens. 2. What the NSW rules require

Under clause 4.15.2 of the Service and Installation Rules of NSW, an electrical installation must be capable of withstanding the nominated prospective short circuit current without damage. Larger switchboards rated above 400A must withstand the nominated fault for a full second, and the distributor provides site specific values on application.

For everyday installations, the working numbers are 10kA in typical residential areas and 25kA in commercial and industrial zones. Every breaker and the board assembly itself must be built to interrupt or withstand that current, which is a much harder job than carrying a normal load. 3. Why older Sydney switchboards fail the test

A 1970s board with ceramic fuses was designed around the network of its day. Sydney's network has grown denser since, with bigger transformers and shorter cable runs, which pushes fault levels up.

When a serious fault hits an under rated board, the protection can fail to clear it. The result is arcing, fire and a destroyed switchboard rather than a tripped breaker. The rules also require your protection to work in the right order. Your main breakers have to interrupt a fault fast enough that the distributor's fuses upstream never operate.

Supply then stays off until the distributor's crew attends, which can take hours and may incur a charge. Correct grading is part of any compliant consumer mains or power supply upgrade design, and for large or complex sites it is engineered formally through Level 3 design.
