When you ask for more power points, the electrician must assess whether the existing circuit can safely handle the electrical load from extra power points.

If the circuit the new outlets will sit on isn't already running near full capacity, adding power points involves running new cable from the nearest existing outlet to the new location. This is the quickest and most affordable approach. The key question is how easy the cable run is — in a plasterboard-lined house, cable can often be fed through walls with minimal patching. In older Sydney homes with solid brick walls, the cable run is more involved.

  • Living area: at least four doubles, placed where the TV, entertainment unit, and charging areas will be

  • Home office: three to four doubles around the perimeter, USB power point at the desk

  • Garage/workshop: multiple doubles, ideally on their own circuit, at workbench height and near where tools will be used

Since 2000, all new power point circuits in Australian homes must be protected by a residual current device (RCD) — what most people call a safety switch.
